Profile: Brian Greene

In addition to his contributions as a theoretical physicist and author, Greene has also explained and protected physics on television with appearances on The Charlie Rose Show, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer ("string theory is our first hope to resolve the central conflict of 20th century physics"), The Century with Peter Jennings, a CNN profile with Jeff Greenfield, an hour special on Nightline in Primetime, and the Conan O'Brien Show.

Brian Greene
Brian Greene, Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University, is one of the world's leading string theorists. String Theories are considered by many as the natural successor to Albert Einstein cosmological quest for a Unified Field Theory, or what has become known as the 'theory of everything'. This framework seeks a united way to combine all the known natural forces (weak and strong nuclear forces, electromagnetism and gravity). For physics, this antagonism between small and large, quark and galaxy, has a possible deep resolution for string theorists in the geometry of space-time itself. Higher Dimensions than the three extended space coordinates and time itself provide the fabric for all matter. The geometry of space-time is generated by vibrations of tiny energy loops -- a billionth of a billionth the size of an atom. One way to test these theories is using high-energy particle accelerators. In this way, atom smashers serve as microscopes to probe the smallest distances in a global race to build the next big collider (> 27 kilometers), or what is otherwise a global race to build the highest energy machine ever conceived.

Once I'm finished reading my slew of political books, this book and his other one will be next on my list. A friend of mine has been reading it and says it's a great book.
