I love the show, but 90% of the episodes are the same.

Some customer brings in a rare item.

Rick, "Well what do you have for me?"

Customer, "This is a solid gold penis. It was actually Henry VIII's penis removed at his death and then covered in solid gold."

Rick, "Wow, well I don't know much about these, so let me get a friend down here who specializes in antique solid gold penis to take a look."

Cut to Rick in the back one-on-one "I don't know if this thing is real, but if it is, I want it. It just depends what I have to pay for it."

Then the expert shows up confirms it's real and values the thing at like $500,000. The customer gets starry eyed and starts counting their money.

Rick, "So what do you want to do, pawn it or sell it?"

Customer, "I want to sell it!"

Rick, "What are you looking to get for it?"

Customer, "Well the man said $500,000, so I think $500,000 is reasonable."

Rick, "I can tell you right now that's not going to happen. How about $1,500?"

Customer, "$1,500? The guy said $500,000! $475,000?"

Rick, "Listen I'm in the business of making money. After I buy it from you I've got to clean it up, that's easily $75,000. And honestly there isn't a lot of demand for Henry VIII solid gold penis right now."

Customer, "Ok, $350,000."

Rick, "Tell you what, I'll go $5,000, but I can't go any higher."

Customer, "Can you do $7,500?"

Rick, "...........OK, $7,500. Lets go do some paperwork."

Then the old man yells at Chumlee.

Hahaha. So true. I like the show either way though. The reason the format is the same is because it is effective.

I wanna see a clip of this. I'm finding it kinda hard to believe the show is staged though

Do you also not want money?

I do indeed want money, but I'd prefer buying and selling stuff that I personally see the value in. Unnecessary decorative items don't appeal to me, so I'd have trouble judging what they're worth. Apparently stuff that does nothing more than sit on a shelf can be quite valuable to some people. I just can't wrap my brain around why, so I avoid the whole category of items.

I don't think the show is scripted as much as it might be "directed". They just say give us this feel and the people in the show try to provide that. Such as the pawn dude saying well where did you get this? Prompts the customer to tell a story, although unscripted.

Even if you were as ignorant as the old lady in the show you'd make bank.

Yeah "directed" likely a better description.Though sometimes I feel like its "Ok this lady called and will be bringing in XYZ... lets get a gameplan in place of how we want this to go down"

Rick did explain once though that if he questions where somebody got something, it's usually due to the fact that he has suspicion that it may be stolen. If its stolen the shop gets screwed when the cops come looking (which I'm sure they do often).

Just think of the show as "Antiques Road Show" with cash actually changing hands and I'm sure it'll make more sense. :)

Good quality reality TV. That's all it is. No competing for shit or turning people against each other, and you may learn something!

Well, and instead of impartial appraisers trying to give an honest assessment of the value of something it's just some guys wildly undervaluing everything.

WTF.
That lady sold it for $15K? She must have needed some crack or something.

At least Rick didn't steal it from her and offered her 5 figures, but hell that thing had to be near priceless and she hocked it for $15K. This is what pisses me off about that show. EVERYTHING is so painfully scripted.

Oh and then "Old Man" offers the one dude $3K for the civil war desk? Dude, don't insult the man. Just tell him that its a museum piece and you don't even want to offer money.

I don't even get why people bring this kind of shit into a PAWN SHOP.

I love to hate this show, and hate to love it.

I love that show.

And nobody is holding a gun to these people's heads. I don't get why you hate the pawn shop owners for simply doing business. That's like getting angry with a cop for writing you a ticket when you were the one breaking the law. He's just doing his job.

Exactly, I don't feel sympathy for people dumb enough to trust the assessment of someone who's trying to make a profit off them.

I wasn't upset about them offering $15K for the Spider. I was mad at her for accepting it.

As far as the $3K for the Civil War item, it was rather insulting, and I have seen other instances where Rick has just said "Look I'm not even going to offer you anything for it, because it would be insulting to you to do so... this belongs in a museum..."

I just don't get the mentality of the people that bring this kinda of stuff in. I mean who in their right mind would bring in a FLAWLESSLY preserved Civil War item that is in-turn a family heirloom too? The logic or bringing it to a PAWN SHOP, especially in today's age where you can google, email, etc anyone in the world for such an item, is beyond me.

Wait. This is exactly my point too. These people are stupid!
I like the museum curator who will give a history and validate the authenticity of items but will NOT give estimates to them. Those, like this Civil War desk, are always the priceless items it seems.
