May be a crap post but I was wondering how close are AMD to being capacity limited ? I imagine that AXP?s, Opterons take up the majority of the capacity, however overclockers.com always hints in there put downs that not all the capacity is being utilized .

Doesn?t AMD have some capacity @ IBM?s east fish kill?

it was xmas, good time to make a bit of money?

demand is high jack up prices and make a bit of money, if prices were a bit higher maybe amd woudl save up and make more manufacturing plants?
 
Of course they short.. AMD subcontracted other companies to make the A-XP/semp chips cause they can't handle demand for thier sweetness.
 
Last I read AMD was only using 50% of FAB 30. Tho its been awhile since I read, as for everyone running out. If your talking about A64's, part that is because they are having problems making them just as Intel has had problems making prescot.
 
anyone know anything about yields on 90nm? I heard they were good, but that was just hearsay. If they are having problems filling demand this might be a good sign about demand :thumbsup:
 
As far as I've heard, AMD isn't using any of IBM's facility for manufacturing... Just to co-develop some processes such as their recent strained silicon transistor technology.

They recently came to an agreement with Chartered Semiconductor to manufacture their 64-bit family, but they haven't actually started any manufacturing for them yet. (AMD has previously had agreements with UMC and TSMC, but neither came to fruition.)

And I am also fairly certain they are using 100% of their capacity. I can't see why they wouldn't be.


Btw... If you hate Ed's commentary's so much, why do you read them???
 
well I try to keep open mind, and so much for "Hate", more I "disagree" then anything.

I wouldnt be much of a open minded person If I didnt listen to ED, even if he's full of it in some points.

You say there using all thier capacity, he's say there not...."Play the X files theme tune"
 
I spoke to a worker at Intel in the Ireland fab and he said that AMD were having trouble with yields on the athlon 64, but there?s always some little whisper that there fine, if so, should they be making more ? are they limited by the capacity ? how much of FAB 30?s capacity split up into Opterons/ AXP?s/ A64?s/AXPM/ FX?s.


Wingznut, you seem fairly Pro overclockers or should I say you look more kind hearted on Ed?s thoughts. But he says there are not using all of the capacity of FAB 30, and you say they are, so that?s two conflicting views, so one of you is wrong.

I thought he'd be a better source then say ED from overclockers, being in the industry helps Im sure, but he seemed faily open minded and gave it to AMD for the K8.

Ah well I'll never know unless I learn german and sneak into FAB 30 myself, lol, like I said its nothing I will lose sleep over.
 
If you search Zebo ( mayb be a few months old), he always mentions that AMD can hardly be using all of FAB 30, because the A64 isnt selling like hot cakes.
 
They bust Ed here for being wrong about AMD's ability to make the transition to 90nm without the heat issues Intel encountered or the problems IBM has had with it. But then they go and say

Pros: Exceptional PC gaming performance for the price; 90nm version runs cooler

Cons: Trails the equivalent Pentium 4 in most other applications; 512KB L2 cache

Summary: If you want a great CPU for PC gaming at a reasonable price, the 3500+ is worth a look. Great for small form factor PCs

You presume incorrectly... I have zero opinion on those thoughts. I have read but one Ed article in my entire life. And that was only because you had posted a thread a few weeks ago.

I wonder why you read his articles, only because this is the third or fourth thread you've posted about his articles, without an example.


Only AMD knows for sure what their loadings are in F30. This is some of the most highly guarded information in this industry, and anyone else is just speculating.

Maybe if you provided a link to the article(s) in question, it might help.
