Yeah, but I bet it doesn't catch on fire!

That's sitting in a crate, no rework yet done.

They don't put upolstery in the seats of fighter jets - the CORRECT padding is part of the flight suit.
it's a little thing about ejection seats & static electricity.
You're looking at 'anti-glare covering' - no inside the cockpit reflection of light.

Computer/electronics position sensors failed after repeated commands did not clear the release sequence.
My guess is that it was an intermitent signal, and fail safed in the lock down position.
These are usually the result of a maximum tolerance electrical socket contact mated with a minimum tolerance electrical pin contact.
Vibration gives an alternating on-off-on-off signal, so the computer locks down the system to prevent accidental deployment.

Assuming that picture is facing north (firefighters are kinda in the way ;) ) you could turn to the east and see where I worked.

EDIT: Also, why did the Engineers let the firefighters drag the glass over the body and damage the LO? You gotta wonder who's pocket the money to fix this is coming from. Oh wait, it comes from our collective pockets, joy.

Who that crap buys that expensive of an aircraft without the extended warranty plan?

its an ejection seat.. its not a Ferrari...
This is Military hardware it needs to only function doesnt have to look good..

that is just a cover for the seatpan survival equipement anyway.. its hard as a rock..

it looks like the Inside of our F/A-18C/Ds I worked on for 8 years. same displays and looks like the same series ejection seat.

as long as the displays are off nothing is confidential..

I swear by looking at the responses to this thread that none of you have ever been exposed to Military aircraft.

Yeah, I was thinking why not eject to save the $182K?

Yeah, the pilot w/b bruised up a bit, but still.

should have let the engineers have more time to figure out what is wrong before cutting the cockpit open for 180k, let the pilot piss his pants if they have to.

Wow the thought of having a chainsaw blade inches away from the skull is terrifying.

Screw the plane, they can build more.

Where's that machine that tore up the minivan? ;)

Uhm - you realize that ejecting would destroy the canopy also - as well as the ejection seat and other misc. hardware. Not to mention that a zero/zero ejection, while possible, isn't the safest thing.

I got court marshalled for doing just that. Falcon 3.0 was great. Ah the memories. ;)

what I dont understand is that all these fighter aircraft have a crank you can use when the canopy is out of power or the mech gets messed up.. why didnt they just crank it open..

or in the rare case that doesnt work and you have to destroy the canopy anyway fire/rescue woulda just used the canopy jettison emergency switch... it doesnt eject the pilot just ejects the canopy away from the aircraft.

we had it happen a few times with hornets pilots would accidently pull the wrong lever lol..

I bet Steven Siegal could have gotten out of that mess. If not, you-know-who, could have gotten out with one chop.

I guessing ejecting from a stationary plane, is still much more expensive than cutting the canopy. I'm pretty sure ejecting from a flying plane is.

Because an ejection trashes a $182,000 canopy, a $200,000 ejection seat, and $75,000,000 worth of electronics, probably zeros out all the data stored in all the electronics that DO survive, risks setting secondary fires and explosions - hell, for all we know, the damn things are rigged to explode on punchout, risks a pilot's life, and is generally a bad thing(TM)

Not only that but even todays 0/0 seats arnt 100% safe...

and even successful ejections can end a pilots years of flying.
not only the damage to the aircraft... the rockets fry the entire cockpit when a seat goes off...
the aircraft does not explode but the cockpit is basically 100% loss...

we had seats go off when I was in. messy cleanup when some newbie planecaptian accidently pulled a level with his foot getting into a plane that a pilot had left and not safed the seat..

Well.....it could be worse right? it could have been stuck while he had to eject and he gets shot through the canopy....eck!

actually that seat will go right through that canopy open or closed.. this isnt top gun.. the seats are designed to punch through..

yeah, thats why I said shot through. It would be worse case for the pilot having to go through that. An ejection is the last thing you ever want to go through, and getting shot through the canopy only makes your day worse.

the only way he had AC was if they brought in an external one or let let him turn his APU which while firefighters were working on the Aircraft which isnt something that normally happens.

It looks like they rolled the plane into a hanger, and then pulled it back out to cut the top off.
