F150 Raptor

I'll be test driving a new F150 Raptor either tomorrow or Tuesday. Anyone have anything in specific they want me to check out on it?

The one I'm looking at has the tech package and the 5.4l (the 6.2 isn't out yet). It's gunmetal with black stripes on it.

Are they letting you take it off road? They better.

Try to get it in some sand or soft mud of decent depth. The biggest failing of full-size trucks offroad is their extra weight tends to bog them in soft stuff. If the dealer will let you air down the tires before leaving asphalt, that would be ideal.

I like the idea behind this truck. It's basically a factory-built long-travel OR suspension kit. The improved front bumper approach angles, though not as good as aftermarket, are welcome.

I still think you get better value for your money if you truly do offroad by buying a Tacoma or Frontier at $26000 and then adding a long travel, trail armor, and supercharger - cost would be about the same as the raptor, and it would likely be more capable offroad. It would certainly be more resistant to damage.

Have fun though. This is by far the best factory-offer OR package I've ever seen on a truck. I wish Toyota would do something like this with the Taco.

Nice truck, but I don't see why anyone buys new off-road vehicles 🙁 I'm gonna get an old 70s Grand Cherokee, Jx000 or maybe a CJ for that kind of abuse. You can build some truly ridiculous off-roaders with any of those three, and you don't have to worry about little things like dents or whatever.

My brother bought a new Range Rover back in 2000 or so, and abused the crap out of it offroad, which is better I suppose than never using it at all.

I think you mean wagoneer or the original body on frame cherokee. The grand cherokee wasn't made until '93 and was only made as a unibody vehicle.

Yeah that's what I meant. I replaced Wagoneer with Cherokee because I was second guessing my spelling of Wagoneer 🙂 Just a weird looking word.

Yeah, I want my next jeep to be a full sized jeep. Then I can use it to pull around my CJ so I don't have to drive it on the highway.

For serious offroading, I'd agree. Moderate or less doesn't really threaten your paint much.

Besides, trail trophies add character.

Chicks dig body damage 😉

Honestly though I've taken my cherokee and CJ through some pretty nasty obstacles and I only have a few paint chips and a slightly bent cross member (suspension compressed coming down off a rock and it snagged). If you're not a moron and aren't doing ridiculous things the risk of damage is pretty minimal.

Agreed. As usual, it's much more the driver than the equipment.

Sometimes the terrain itself is just a mess though. I like to be able to drive through rough brush without crying about scratching the paint on a new vehicle. Ditto with fording decent water, you can't see roots / rocks underwater all that well = scuffs on the wheels, etc. Something that you might avoid in a pretty new $25k+ truck is something you might just drive through in your old school Jeep and not worry about more paint chips, scratches, little dents, and so on.

I didn't get the chance to go out there today, so it'll be early this week. As far as getting a jeep etc, this car isn't for off-roading. I'm buying it for off-road *racing*, I have some friends that race in Vegas and would like to start doing it with them. I don't want to spend insane amounts of money and this is a very quick way to jump into a stock class. I'll probably baby the paint while it's on-road, but won't care so much about racing damage. Same as any car that you use as a track-day toy.

Unfortunately due to the location of the dealership I won't be able to get into any real off-roading, but I'll be able to get a feel for the truck and make a decision about purchase or not.

So my impressions after driving:

There was strong torque in the middle of the power band, but the power just wasn't there for the weight of the truck. I may have to wait for the 6.2l.

The suspension was *sweet* They let me take it over a row of 15 speed bumps at speed and the truck never lost it's composure in the least bit.

The fit and finish was excellent, far better than any of our GM vehicles.

It looks very mean. Nearly maniacal.

The interior was comfortable and well thought out, the driving position was a little tall for me though (I'm 6'5)

Rear view cameras in the rear view mirror are pretty sweet.

They quoted me with $1k under MSRP before TT&L

I'm actually surprised that they're even offering under MSRP on that kind of car.

Yep, I was expecting them to tack on some fees extra but it was all very reasonable. The manager even straight up told me I was going to get better financing from an outside bank on a car like this.

Well wait for the 6.2 and let us know how it goes.

I'm debating waiting for the 6.2 or boosting the 5.4, going to find out what class that would put me in tomorrow. If I were to boost it, I would probably do remote mount turbo's since they would likely stay the coolest and the lag shouldn't effect me terribly.

On the other hand I could do a blower and have a lot more heat under the hood but have zero lag at all.
