F1 2011 Rules Changes

rather than link directly (and maybe incompletely), i'll refer to analysis and discussion in progress:

Stewards get new powers to act on driving standards

F1 race stewards have been given the power to exclude drivers from race results and suspend them from forthcoming races for improper driving under the 2011 sporting regulations published today by the FIA.

The new rules set down how drivers may defend their position and forbid “deliberate crowding of a car beyond the edge of the track”.

Among other changes the 107% rule has been reinstated and the ban on team orders dropped.

FIA reveals full 2011 technical rules changes

The FIA has published the full technical regulations for 2011 including the specifications of the driver-adjustable rear wings being introduced for next year.

Several new rules aimed at curbing flexible bodywork have also been introduced.

The regulations also include a raft of new safety measures including extra wheel tethers and tougher tests for the survival cell.

I don't see any problems with the new regs...and as much as I've loved the high revving V8's, I think downsizing and pushing more durable engines is exactly what the sport needs to do. To me the most exciting part of motorsports is the technology that eventually trickles down to passenger cars.

Something not many have picked up on -

Weight
From 2011, the minimum weight of the car must not be less than 640kg at all times during the event.

It was 605kg in 2009 and went up to 620kg in 2010, and now has gone up even more...

th rule most (including me) are objecting to is the movable rear wing. not the fact that it moves, but adjustment is only allowed when a car is 1 second or less behind the position ahead of it. it's an absolute gimmick, and needlessly complicated.

Looks like the Austin track just got approved for its grading permit.

"Groundbreaking will be taking place very soon."

so excited

I wonder what the drive on I-10 to & from Austin is gonna be like on race day.

Really excited and looking forward to driving to that race!

Well, he hasn't done that in a long time, so it must be someone else...

O'rly?

yet, when webber did the EXACT SAME THING to massa, nobody gives a shit.

You couldn't slip a wrapping paper between Barrichello's right front tire and that barrier and he was doing probably 180mph when that pic was taken...and neither of them lifted.

I don't seem to recall as dangerous an incident between Webber and Massa but I could be wrong.

The governing body is confident that modern devices such as the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) will mean that the move from the present 2.4-litre V8s to 2013's 1.6-litre, four cylinder engines does not see a loss of performance.
"Following dialogue with the engine manufacturers and experts in this field, the power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm.

Here's my prediction for Formula1 in the future...

2011
Among the major revisions for next season are
The removal of the ban on team orders.
The introduction of driver-adjustable rear wings.
The effective outlawing of double diffusers, stricter bodywork deflection tests.
Requirement for gearboxes to last five rather than four Grand Prix weekends.
The re-introduction of intermediate tyres for 2011
5 engines per season
2012
Team communications will be made available to broadcasters
The inclusion of fuel compounds produced from biomass
A limitation on suspension uprights
4 engines per season
2014
All engine components to be made from recycled beer cans.
All body work and wishbones to be made from Hemp Reinforced Plastic.
All human waste from Grand Prix venue's spectators to be used by Pirelli as fertilizer in their rubber plantations. Synthetic rubber banned.
2015
All F1 fans defect to Moto GP

Taken out of context, and besides we know everyone is referring to Schumacher's famous swerve on the starts when he was on the front row, which he hasn't been in a while...

Actually, this new rule was almost entirely in response to the incident between Schumacher and Barrichello that I posted pics of above and it happened in Hungary this year.

The new rules set down how drivers may defend their position and forbid “deliberate crowding of a car beyond the edge of the track”.
