"Hello customer. Please spend $189 for each of your computers for our Operating System. Please note that just because you are spending $600 for a product that has a cost of $3, that does not mean that we are going to treat you well. As a matter of fact, we are going to provide ZERO support for your purchase."

So you bought an OEM CD, saved a couple bucks, and now you want support?

Also, where do you get the $3 cost from?

Actually no...full retail.

Vista SP 2 won't install and I'm beyond flustered. I've posted in the right place to get help, this is my pissed off thread.

And $3 is what I figured the DVD and packaging cost them. Including shipping.

I just want to know why their stupid service pack won't install. I don't need to know how to use the damn thing...just why their update isn't working.

Oh well. I've uninstalled everything that I can think of that runs at boot that might interfere. One more try....wish me luck!

I assume you've already done so, but make sure you have all the updates up to the SP release. If I remember right, there's some prerequisite updates, but it should inform you of that.

good luck.

so you have a retail copy of vista, is it because it's past the 1 year mark of owning it that they won't help?

that's what i did. clean install > mobo, video, etc drivers > windows update x100 > SP2 stand-alone .exe > windows update x100 > non-essential devices and drivers.

yeah.....I've tried all the normal stuff. I'm sure its something simple.

I'm not looking for help in this thread. This is simply a rant thread.

This.

Buy oem upgrade and do one of the methods to install the full version.

I spent $300 for windows 7 on 6 PC's for myself and my family.

afaik it works for vista too.

how do you get 6 legit copies of 7 for $300? Or are we talking not legit?

I don't know why this is such a difficult concept for some people to grasp. You aren't paying for the media and packaging. You're paying for the years of R&D, programming, marketing, etc. that went into developing and selling the product. Not to say that $200 probably isn't *seriously* overpriced (just look at how much Dell and others pay for OEM licenses, IIRC I think I read somewhere it's $30-50, somewhere in that area; or how much MS sells their OS for in China and other developing nations because they can't get away with the assrape prices they charge over here), but I'm sure it's more than $3 as well.

$50 preorder price, but I think you can still get family licenses, 3 for $150.

I'm talking upgrade though, not full version.

[EDIT] Oops, looks like the family licenses stopped selling a while ago. $100/each is the cheapest I see now.

Nothing beats the MSDNAA deal from last year. 11 copies of XP, 9 of Vista (Pro 32 and 64), 8 copies of Windows 7 Pro (32 and 64) and shitloads of other MS software (Server 2008, 2003, 2008R2, Visio, Project...and on...)...all for $19.99 (legit)!!!

I love SlickDeals.net! :p

I got in on the Feedback Panel deal. I ended up with 2 complete sets of Vista 32 bit and 64 bit mailed to me.
I did a full restore/install on my old P4 Northwood and it runs fine...but my Soundblaster Live card wouldn't work no matter what "workaround" or modded drivers I tried.

Microsoft has never supported Vista for the masses, but rather, try to convice people how great it is by spending millons of dollars on advertisement. So, given this, why would you expect support as an individual?
