F-prot locks up VIA systems

I have always recomended F-prot as a good free/cheap anti-virus solution, and have bene using it since '95. However quite a few of the new systems i have been working on will not run F-prot in windows. If you boot to a dos prompt, then the prog will run. If run from windows, it just freezes up, and you have to end task. The only thing these computers have in common is they are all PIII with a VIA chipset motherboard running Win98SE. Since it works in DOS and with a non-VIA mb im asusming the problem has something to do with drivers. I loaded on the newest 4in1 drivers from VIA, and no success. Anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?
