F@H

I haven't really had the time to pay too much attention to any of my pc's running F@H.

I just noticed ALL of my SMP clients are no longer valid.

I attempted to install the latest client, but gave up at:
. d) run the standard mpiexec -np 2 foo test application to make sure things work. On some WinXP systems, you may see a defective Windows Firewall dialogue box come up. The firewall may also ask you to unblock applications (this is a good idea).

I didn't see a mpiexec -np. I did see a mpiexec icon, but running it does nothing (box appears and disappears instantly).

I know I am missing something simple here, but I just don't have the time or energy to figure it out.
Anyone have any SIMPLE instructions for me. I used to run the SMP on 2 XP Pro machines and on one Linux machine (that was a super pain in the ass to get running the first time around).

I noticed my point total has dropped off like no other. I've been running since 2004, and I'd hate to just give up over some overly complicated crap like this.

Hi Uppsala9496,

Here is a simple layout of how I was able to get my SMP clients to work.

1) First thing you must do is have a Password for your windows administrator. Just create a password for your windows and remember it. Also, Remove any and
all old F@H clients that you may have on your machine.

2) Download the FAH6.22 beta2-win32-smp-mpich client

3) Install to a directory in on your C drive of your choice. I created a directory F@H

4) After installing you must click onto the "Install batch" file, It will open and you will answer 3 questions, (1), your windows user name.
It will already appear just type it in. (2), your password. Type it in. You will NOT see it as you type but type it in anyway.(3),Your password again,
and enter it again. Then hit any key. It should have a message twice line and thats good.

5) Right click onto the Folding @ home application and add it to your desktop or Quick launch. After doing that right click on that and hit Properties
and in the target box at the end place the curser and hit the space key Add: -configonly and apply.

6) Open the program from your desktop or quick launch and do the following.

User Name: ( thats you )
Team Number: 198
use Proxy: no
Acceptable size: big
Change advanced options: YES
Core Priority: low
CPU usage: 100
Disable Highly....: no
Interval in Mins: 15
Memory : Whatever you have
Set -advmethods flag always: no....this will be added later
Ignore any deadline: no
machine ID: 1
The Following Options.......no
Disable Cpu affinity: no
Additional client parimeters: ( this is important) -smp -verbosity 9 -advmethods -forceasm You must have -smp added as a flag or it will NOT be SMP client.
ip address: just hit enter.

Note: Others may have some differances, But I have tried all and the outcome is pretty much the same.

7) Now right click on the application again and remove the -configonly in the target line and apply.
8) Click onto the client again to start it up and thats it. It will Start loading and downloading information.

Get F@H Moitor to help you keep track of other clients you may want to have running....

Hope this helps, good luck and Don't give up. Once you get used to it, It's pretty easy....🙂

The config file of the new one is not compatible with the old one.

You have to make sure to run for the first time with the -smp and the -configonly flag to get it squared away. (I forgot it the first time I tried)

For subsequent runs, you need to use the -smp flag (and any others you usually ran) every time.

To clear everything up, run add/remove programs (be sure the ciient is completely stopped) then erase the remaining contents of your folding directory(s) and then install the new one just like you did for the previous versions. use the MPICH version not the deino. (the deino version is not so straight forward to install)

the deino version is really frustrating- could never get it to work. . . .the mpich version is pretty much the same as the old smp client except you have to add the -smp flag to your parameters. . . .good luck!

They made an extended expiration date (good until November) executable that you only need to drop into your directory. No update needed - no early testing of the new beta! That would be the simplest thing to do.

GleeM, I did not spot the extended version.

I ended up installing the deino version on three computers and it was a pain to get running. I almost got the hang of it about the third time. 😕

Uppsala9496, I almost gave up myself. Keep diddling................ 😛

This was really helpful - thanks much Drsignguy. I finally got it working on both of my dual-core boxes, and no more of that 50% utilization garbage!! I can't wait for some real scores after the last week of 400ppd.
