F@H takes a dump every time I finish a wu

Hello everyone!

Just wondering if anyone can help me with my problem, I have completed 2 wu now and both times F@H has had an error and windows shut it down. Does anyone know what is going on? Do I have something set up wrong? I am new to this so any help would be great!

Welcome to the TA-DC forums!!😀

I'm, sure that some of the old F@H pros can help you with that one. But give us some more info like PC specifications, operating system and so on. 🙂

Sorry, here is what I am using right now:

HP amd xp 3200+
Windows xp Home with SP2
Folding@Home v5.03

the only settings I have changed in F@H are in the advanced tab in the F@H control panel, I had to turn down the cpu usage percent because it was making my computer run to hot.

Will I loose the progress I have on my current wu if I uninstall F@H and reinstall it? What is the best version to install? I tried v5.03 does v5.02 have any benefits over 5.03. I really could use any help.

Bump so the FAH gurus will find us! 😀

(sorry I can't be of help.... firewall or anything in the way of your internet access that could cause the problem when FAH tries to send results?)

Sounds like a good idea... I know I had to allow it on ZoneAlarm for it to work... WXP firewall is probably the same thing.

edit: Make sure it is for the FAH executable, not just one of the cores....

If you installed it as Administrator and run it as a different user, I would also suggest checking file permissions to make sure everyone who needs it has read, write, etc., permissions for the F@H folder.

Welcome to the TeAm, natethegreat 🙂

Your two WUs have gotten through to Stanford: you are rank 562

Have you recently cleaned the dust out the box and expecially the heatsink? Also make sure air can get in and out. (HP would be embarrassed if one of their computers could not run a full load 🙂)

Not sure why XP shuts down FAH. Could be the firewall. Is there any info on an error window?

Thanks for the help!

I just had the case open a week ago and blew a ton of dust out of it(I did not get the heat sink, I will be soon but I am out of canned air). I was getting 70c reading off MBM, Do you think speedfan would be a better program to monitor temps? About the error message, I just closed the error report and reopened F@H the first time it happened I didn't think much of it. I guess my wife closed the second one so I did not get to see it. At least my wu's are getting credited. My next one will be done around 6:30 pm central time I can let you all know the exact error message I get then. Thanks again!🙂

I took off the side panel and looked at my heatsink/fan combo. It is a coolermaster setup and it is pretty free of dust. is 70c high for a for an xp 3200 with stock hsf? Do I need to look for a better hsf? I just got the computer for my wife on the begining of march(before that I was using a hp 486😱) I have noticed that mbm has reported much cooler temps lately and so I have moved the throttle back up to 100%🙂 I will also be doing my first build in march of '05 and am looking at different hsf combos for that as well.

70c is pretty hot. my amd pc's with 100% cpu load dont even get close to that temp. do you have ample case fans in that bad boy?

This is just a store bought. I am trying to talk my wife into a new motherboard and case for it but she likes things to "match":disgust: MBM says it is running at 60c right now at 100% usage but I have heard the readings could be off. BTW it has one 120mm fan in the back.

If I was you I'd go and get some additional case fans for this computer. My 3200+ runs at 45 °C with 100% load. Yours is really high. I wouldn't say that it's already threatingly high, but something that you should investigate further, or else you CPU lifetime might really fall shorter than expected.

I had temps of 60c, the top of the case was even warm.

I added one fan on the inside, the top of the case is now cool and temps are 45c 🙂

I would be worried at 70c too! Better watch close, a few WUs are not worth it.

I have heard that MBM's readings can be off. I think you can set it to alarm at a high temp.

Looks like adding an exception in the xp firewall did the job😀 Thanks for your help everyone:thumbsup: Guess this thread can die now...

natethegreat, yeah these posts have been about your cooling.

Not that we don't care about FAH.

We don't want to see you harm your computer. We are hard on our own hardware, but easy on others.

A fan can be had for ~ $10, maybe a bit more for a quiet one. Myself, I would try adding a fan before doing anything else. It worked wonders for me 🙂
