Hey folks, just got a used PC and figured I'd chip in some to the folding project. It looks like your team needs a little help so I thought I'd join up.

I read all of the basic FAQs but I just wanted to make sure eveything was all set.

I'm mostly through my first work unit of the "p638" molecule (something like 85%) and it should be done this afternoon. I made sure "198" is in the Team Number field, is there anything else I need to do?

New northbridge cooling on my NF7-S has gotten me up to 220 FSB stably (😉, 😉 more WUs). I may try for more today.

I just wanted to make sure that you know that that WU is 400 frames long. I am doing one of those right now too. This is what my console shows: [23:34:10] Finished a frame (374)

The Tinker core shows frames completed. The Gromacs core shows % completed. Tinkers can be 20, 40, 100, 200, 400 frames long, maybe other lengths too. You can find out here: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

Thanks for the welcome... my computer finished p638 (Tinker) a few hours ago, so I just got my first 239 points for Team AnandTech 🙂

Performance on p638 was about 4 minutes 30 seconds per frame, I think that stacks up pretty well to expectations.

But since then my computer has been having some problems with its new WU, p569 on the Gromacs core. It runs 1% increments in about 5:30, but in just a couple hours the core has segfaulted twice, causing me to lose all work, and then worse yet, it went BSOD 10% into the third try. :frown:

I am not totally sure this is the cause, but I have some bad RAM in this box... the 1GB DIMM that came with it failed Memtest-86 yesterday and I think I need to replace it. At the risk of getting offtopic, does anyone have recommendations the best brands (Corsair, Kingston, OCZ) and/or amounts (512, 1024) to get for an Athlon FX? Thanks for your help.

lol, I like the way you try to make us think it is an older rig by saying that you "just got a used PC". FX huh 🙂 That is an awesome processor. I don't even want to tell you the time my P4 3.0C @ 3.3 got. 5 minutes 31 seconds 🙁 Although with HT I can run two clients and get two frames done in about 8 minutes 🙂

The bad ram or overclock to high is the problem. Gromacs core is a very good stability tester. It really taxes your rig. It makes a good new computer burn in program. If your rig is not stable the Gromacs core will fault.

I don't know about the best ram for Athlon FX. You will have to wait for someone else to post or check on the AnandTech main page, I bet they have done a review.

Well, it's definitely a "used" rig. Got it from a guy in midtown Manhattan who assembled it as a homebrew and then had to put it up for auction on eBay last month. Maybe he was late with the rent or something.

So anyway I wound up winning the auction and picked up the rig the other day. A bunch of stuff (such as hard drives) is also goofed up inside besides the defective RAM, but between the FX-51, video card, monitor, and liquid cooled case, I'd say I got my money's worth. Still it's certainly turned into a project (not to mention a headache, at times) and I agree with you totally that Folding@Home makes for a great burn-in while I get things straightened out.

I know for sure it's not overclocked (anymore, anyway) because I flashed the BIOS two days ago... So I'll probably replace the RAM and see how well Gromacs WUs do after that. I'm back up to 15% on p569 now ... maybe I should leave best alone for tonight and let F@H do its thing without me stealing anymore of its mojo listening to MP3s and surfing the forums 🙂

That's a sweet rig. Dunno if I'd pay 1300 for it though. I would rather get 5 1700+ systems and put them together....(Actually, I have) but thanks for joining with us in a common cause.
