In Other News...

This article [pdf file] appeared on the F@H news page. It is somewhat introductory, but also provides some interesting insights on the F@H project that some (including myself) might not be familiar with. :)

it seems like Zuke is folding tinkers at this moment and he splits only some of his forces to fold with us.

My herd will grow, it's just going to take me a week or so to bring it up to speed. I'm just running on 2 machines at the moment.

Starting Monday, I'll be bringing more machines online. I have a total of 21 1.8ghz P4 machines, plus about another 10 or 12 700mhz P3 machines, plus about 3 or 4 other machines in the 700-800mhz range.

All told, probably around 50ghz processing power.

Basically, I'm trying to decide what is the best way to deploy. All the machines but 2 are on a single windows network. I think what I'm going to do is simply walk around with an install setup on a compact flash card in a reader and plug the reader into the USB ports of each machine. I'd like to be able to push it all out with a logon script, but since I'm still learning that part of system administration, this method seems easiest. Sysadmin isn't my main responsibility, but I'm kind of taking it on since it isn't too large a network and I'm interested. :)

Anyways, once I get a few machines borged, I understand that EMIII is the best thing to install to monitor the clients? I'm confused a bit - can I simply install EMIII on my desktop and it will sniff/monitor all other clients on the LAN?

EMIII is the best to monitor your folding rigs across LAN network (some can make it work across TCP/IP but I don't know how). After you instaleed EMIII on your desktop then you add all network paths to the box (point to FAH3Console or Winfah for GUI version) EMIII should pick up folding process from those rigs.

If you still need help regarding EMIII you can ask here or in getting start, a lot of our TeAm members can help you.
Here is the screen shots of EM III

3. http://www.geocities.com/hoonnirun/Full_screen.jpg
4. http://www.geocities.com/hoonnirun/feature.jpg

BTW don't forget to add flags on your folding rig to get Gromac like this "C:\FAH\FAH3Console.exe" -forceasm -advmethods -verbosity 9" -advmethods to get Gromac Cores (not always), - forceasm to enable SSE on your system and -verbosity 9 to force to send WUs every a certain hours and also to see a brenchmark of your system. I don't recommen these flags for slow system.

Note that you need to share the F@H folder on each of the machines that you want to monitor over the network. For security, all that is needed is read-only access, but the folder needs to be r/o accessible to everyone. Feel free to ask more questions if you run into difficulty; we'll be glad to (try to) help you out. :)

50GHz worth of machines, right on! It's perfect timing too, since we (Poopflingers) will start to slow back down to a more normal level with just our home and work desktops cranking away. This weekend should see some new daily high scores for us, but starting next week points will start going away as we gradually put our servers into production. But there will be a new round of servers eventually. I'm hoping that by then the folding client supports multiple processors a little better since we might be building an 8 or 16-way Itanium server and I'd love to see what it could do!
