F@H-running as a service

I was running the graphic version but am trying to switch to the console. It only seems to be working if I have the file open. What do I need to do to have this run 24/7? This is on a Win 2000 machine.

I believe when you run the program using the -configonly flag, there is a question where they ask you whether you wanna run it as a service, just type yes.

I set it up that way, but it doesn't seem to be running unless I leave the FAH console program running. With that window closed, my high CPU temp dropped about 7 degrees and according to FAH Log Stats v.72 I made no progress overnight.

you need to restart the compie after this is done. Other than that, maybe you are not logged in with admin priviliges. That is all I can say about it.

When it's running as a service, you won't see anything at all. The only way to know it's running is to open the task manager and look at processes. It'll be FahCore_XX

globalcitizen is correct! Right after you install the service it runs in a dos box and if you close it crunching stops so either leave the dos box open and minimized until you restart at which time it will run as a service in the background. If you want to be certian just go ahead and restart the box right after the installation.

Just make sure that you never run two copies of the same client at the same time. In other words, delete any F@H shortcuts from your startup menu. Then you can either reboot now or open the Services panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services) and right click on the F@H service to start it.

What are the benefits of running F@H as a service?

There's no visible icon or taskbar button for other users to (accidentally or on purpose) close, and the client keeps running even if the computer is sitting at the login screen.

Gotcha; guess I'm definitely keeping it running like this. I sometimes run multiple video editors at once if I have several projects/ideas going at once, or maybe some file compressors, and I like to prioritize them; F@H often gets bumped out. I only wish Task Manager had more priority levels available - 10 might be nice, with one absolute lowest setting for Idle. The "Low" Priority setting doesn't always seem to be low enough.
