F@H Question - Now a different question - nevermind

Ok, I've downloaded the FH2 CLI for my dual XP1800+ and got KDFold, too. Can't KDFold control everything as SetiDriver does for SETI?

How do I get it to run on both CPUs and use KDFold to monitor progress? Or should I use some other 3rd-party app?

Also, is the WU server down? I ran fah2console -config and it got to Getting ID from AS and kept timing out.

conjur, for a dual processor I believe you have to download 2 copies of the cli, putting each into a separate directory and start each one. Then in KDfold, you point to the different folders for it to follow each wu's progress. As for downloading a wu, yes sometimes ( well, alot ) it's slow. Just start it and let it sit there, it should pick one up eventually. 🙂

Yup that's what I did - I installed last night and it didn't pick up a WU until ~7am this morning 🙁 So hopefully by tommorow morning I can send in my first results 😀 (BP6 w/ celly500s OC'd to ~635)😀

FU!!FU!!FU!! <-- doesn't sound as good as WU!!WU!!WU!! but oh well😱😛

Well, it seems to stop retrying to get the ID after about 10 min. and sits at the config prompts waiting for me to press <Enter> for each one.

That's why I was wondiering if the server was not responding or something.

Bummer.

I also believe that under Winblows, you have to make sure that each instance of FAH2Console.exe has the -local flag, or both instances will be using the registry for it's info, and will be trashing each other.......

Would a Linksys BEFSR41 four-port router be a problem with connecting to the F@H server? Do I maybe need to open a port on the firewall?

Router shouldn't be a problem. I'm running multiple clients behind a Netgear RT311 with no problems. One thing to try is to use -verbosity 9 -config, and you might get more info. It should tell you the IP it's trying to connect to, and then maybe you can check the support egroups page, and see if others are reporting a problem, and/or report a problem with the particular IP you are trying to connect to.

No, a linksys router needs no configuring for it to work, I was using one for the last 4 months without any problems at all. mgpaulus, does he have to put the -local tag on both or just the second instance of FaH??

*edit*--glad to see you guys joining in, the easy work is done and now we take on some of the big guys!

the -verbosity 9 didn't make any difference.

I saw a couple of posts re:the same problem I'm having in some of the yahoo groups but no responses were posted to either of the questions.

I wonder if it's an ISP thing? I'm now on Insight cable modem service (through AT&T infrastructure after Excite@Home went under).

Sort of frustrating. I could try and dial up to an old MSN account thru my laptop but that won't do me any good on my home network.

<sigh>

I believe that the -local flag needs to be on each instance (Just to be safe). Otherwise, one of them will try to use the registry for it's settings.

What IP address is your FAH2Console trying to talk to? Can you do a telnet to the server (try 'telnet 8080')? If you give us the IP, then maybe we can also try it to see whether it's a network thing or a server thing. Also, can you even ping the server/IP, or traceroute to it?

I'm not sure. Actually, I was able to get my laptop to connect using the same network cable. Switched back to the HTPC and no go. I'm not sure the IP address of the server and this other PC is setup the same (DHCP, Gateway, DNS, all te same as my laptop).

Nice rack you got there. Much neater than my mess. Anyway, is one of those machines running Linux? If so, can you get a copy of iptraf, which is an IP monitoring program. It can show you some interesting things about what's going on on your network (I guess it's a software based sniffer...)......

Otherwise, you are having some highly esoteric issues, or some very basic configuration problems on that machine.

Is your subnet mask the same as all others?
Is your DNS settings the same?

Sorry if these questions are basic. Not meaning to insult your intelligence, but having done some End User troubleshooting, sometimes it helps to go back to the basics:
Is it plugged in?
Is it turned on?
Is the power light lit?
Is there paper in it?
"Oh, you mean I need paper?????"

Everything else works fine on this machine. It is running XP Pro if that makes a diff. I can surf, email, nntp, etc. and see my internal network. I did set the gateway to the linksys router and joined my home domain (was in a workgroup by itself) and neither of those made a difference.

This machine runs the SETI CLI just fine but I do connect it to an inhouse SETI Queue

My laptop is a W2K Adv. Server acting as a domain controller and running DNS itself but I usually treat it as a workstation unless I'm on the road as it normally uses DHCP to connect to either my home network or my client's network.

I've thought of trying to GUI for F@H to see what happens but I'm more into making progress than looking at a pretty screen (since this monitor is off most of the time).

My brain is a bit fuzzy right now as I'm home sick (slight fever) and some medication has me a bit woozy so I'm trying to post what makes sense and what info I can think of.

XP Pro shouldn't be a problem. My main rig is running 2 copies of the CLI under XP pro (It's my way of handling long connection timeouts.... While the one process is uploading/downloading, the other gets 100% CPU. Otherwise, they split it 50/50). My kids rig is running 2 CLIs (same reason) under XP Home, and they all seem to work fine.

Another thought. Open up another C:> Prompt, and do a netstat -a. maybe dump it into a file. Then run the FAH2Console in another window, and while it's trying to connect, run another netstat -a. Then you should be able to look at the difference and maybe figure out which IP/port FAH2Console is trying to connect to.

Give the gui a try. It's not like seti where the gui is a lot slower than the cli. The gui is actually on par with the cli.

I agree, that's what I'm running and I don't actually look at the gui, I use kdfold to check my progress...

I'll try the GUI in a bit (if I get to it this evening)

conjur, that happens. It's normal for us. My primary cruncher will sit waiting for it's next wu for a good length of time, depending on what they found in your results and then decide what to send next.. just keep the faith dude, you'll get one🙂

I check my stats and the longest I've had in between wu's is 1 hour. That's rare for me though...they are usually only 1-2 minutes apart.

conjur, what do you see when you try 'telnet <IP> 8080'? Here's the different dialogues I see, and what I suspect they mean:

$ telnet 196.168.0.1 8080
Trying 196.168.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Attempt to connect timed out without establishing a connection

>> I think this means the IP does not have a host on it (No machine with that IP)

$ telnet csu6223286 8080
Trying 166.34.142.209...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

>> I think this means that the host in question is not running a server of the type on that port (No HTTP 8080 server)

$ telnet www.markpaulus.com 8080
Trying 24.221.195.132...
Connected to markpaulus.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

Connection closed by foreign host.

>> This means there is a server/daemon on the specified host/port and it's accepting connections.

What kind of result do you get from a telnet <ip> 8080?

Also, in an earlier post I asked about access to a linux box on your mini-lan. Do you have access to one?

Hmmm...one more question.

If i've downloaded the next WU onto my laptop is it even possible to get another one for another PC? Is F@H like SETI where WUs are just handed out or do the WUs have to follow a certain path?

Also, mgpaulus, no Linux on the network and no Linux experience in my head either 🙂

I'll try and Telnet from that PC when I get home tonight.

That many boxes & no Linux?? Wow, you have many more $$$$ than I do, to be able to afford all the Micro$oft software 🙂
