OK, so now I'm running the V500 client on my (2) machines under WindowsXp. I used the built in service install and all is well.

BUT-----> I don't know how to use the switches (ie: -forceasm, etc... ) Do I use the WindowsXP service manager (Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services) and then modify the path to the executable?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I found this in the F@H forums:

Unfortunately, at this time, the only way to add flags to the service is to edit the registry entry for that service.

1/ Shut down that instance through the Services manager snap-in
2/ Run regedit and go to key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<service name> and edit the entry ImagePath, adding whatever flags you wish to the end. Exit regedit.
3/ Re-open the Services manager snap-in, and verify that your changes appear there, and then restart the service.

NOTE: Registry editing can be dangerous if you do it wrong, although the above is pretty straight forward. Use this procedure at your own risk!

Some methodology of entering the flags at service install time has been requested for the next maintenance release of the client.

For setting up F@H as a service I use firedaemon. Although I am more than comfortable making registry changes and such. I choose not to because of general laziness.:D The lite version is a free download. It allows you to input the flags as parameters. You can even save it as a .xml file to install on other machines.

Here is a link to their web site.

Hope this helps a little

Thanks for the link. :)

Most of us who already had F@H installed as a service used this method pre-v5. The advantage of having a service install built into the client for some is that they might be allowed to use F@H at work, but at the same time might not be allowed to install any other programs (effectively killing the project, since F@H on work PCs is a bad idea if it can't be hidden well from the end users). Now, there is a more straightforward solution, one that some projects (RC5 aka the d.net client) have enjoyed for years.
