I used my 4850 for a couple of months for folding but it eventually started making a little bit of a noise as the fan ramped up. I seem to remember reading several members complaining of gpu issues and mentioned that in video, but nobody there has had any problems. Did I just imagine this, or have several (nvidia and amd users both) had any issues with their video card?
 
I had a powercolor 3870 that I had to work on. The fan was mounted too close to the heat sink so I had to move it a bit. Other than that, my gpu's all fold without too much complaining. Let us know what you find.

I just put another 8800gt to work. the fan wouldn't respond to the evga tool. Might have to get riva on it to make it work. 74 C is a bit warm for that card.
 
I got to 105c at one point on my card before loading the fan fix profile and setting it at 37%. however, for some reason the fan started to make a bit of noise there, eventually leading me to just stop running f@h (for now).
 
I haven't had any hardware issues with my (5) video cards and GPU clients. I did use RivaTuner to manually set the fans to keep Tgpu in the mid/upper 60s and did mild overclocks (NO voltage changes for me.... cooling on VCs sucks too badly for that.)

I use ASUS cards and am happy to have the 3 year warranties just in case.... but no issues so far.

I know I'm kind of late to the folding GPU game, but why are you guys manually setting your fan speeds? I started folding on my 8800gts 640 last week and have just let it default, but I haven't checked my temps either. Does the fan not ramp up appropriately on its own???

Mine will keep changing speeds every few seconds if I don't set it, and hearing the sound pitch change is incredibly distracting. Leaving it at a fixed speed makes it white noise. 😉 And, last I checked, a few degrees cooler than what it chooses on its own.
 
Oh, the fan stories I could tell you! Fans are erratic. Even my 9800gtx won't keep a fan speed when set manually. This is related to a driver issue but I don't know exactly how it works. I also havea 8800GT that won't get beyond 25% no matter what I do so i just put a couple of extra case fans near it and let it cook. Its been running about 80 all day. Prolly only going to complete 2 or three units per day but that's my style. Any piece of hardware that comes into the building is put to use if it can fold. We got a 10 DVD duplicator in Monday and the bastid doesn't have enough proc power to fold nuttin! I was livid!

But I digress! Rivatuner and EVGA precision are the tools I employ to tweak the graphics card. Cooler is better, over clock the snot out of them too.

I set mine manually because the automatic fan control seemed happy with GPU temperatures in the upper 70s and even low 80s. I think the mfgrs. are trying to keep the card as quiet as possible with low fan speeds. Since I knew mine would be loaded 100% all the time, I wanted to be more conservative on temperatures.

I haven't had the issues Gravity describes with fan control. I can only assume it is because I am using ASUS hardware. I can't think of anything else different.

With RivaTuner, I set the fans for direct, manual control. the 9800GTX+ fans needed 80% to stay in the mid to low 60s and the 8800GTS (non-G92) needs 100% to stay in the very low 70s. (runs hotter than the die-shrunk 9800GTX+ cards do)

In the GPU1 days I killed a Sapphire x1900gt, it ran fine for several months then started artifacting in games and giving errors in f@h. Wasn't overheating and was never overclocked so I'm not sure what happened but apparently it just wore out.

Newegg gave me $135 credit when I RMAd it that I used to buy an 8800GT that's crunching happily away today.
