F@H GPU client.

Synomenon

Lifer
I recently installed the F@H GPU client. Whenever I run it, my 9800GX2 begins to emit a high pitched whining noise. When I make both GPUs in the 9800GX2 fold, the whining gets louder.

Anyone else experience this? Will this damage my 9800GX2 if I continue running the F@H GPU client?

Are you 100% sure it's the video card emitting the sound, or the Power Supply? More common for PSU's to emit high pitched squeals when stressed, although some graphics cards have been know to do this as well.

Your Silverstone 850 should be able to provide plenty of power to a GX2 however. But just triple check the source of the whine.

The fan that cools your card is speeding up to increase airflow and get rid of the heat generated by the work being done...that's all, and it is completely normal. By default the fan runs around 35% or so, quite slow...and it speeds up a lot when the card is under a load (gaming or folding).

It's definitely not the fan. I play with the fan speeds alot and know what it sounds like at different speeds. I've checked the PSU and it's not that either. It's definitely coming from the card. Just googled a bit and found mention of this happening to others.

my 1950pro would squeal when folding, it was a fanless model si it was indeed the chip or something on the card. I never bothered to figure out exactly what it was.

There are some electrical components in on high end video cards that emit an odd high-pitched sound. It's fairly common, and nothing to worry about beyond being slightly annoying.

No, it is something to worry about. Usually, it is the capacitors that emit this high pitch squeal when stressed.

power supply is probably the culprit. Do you have a mb plug that is missing? Enough power to the pci-e slot? I dealt with this same thing this a.m. and it was a 700w psu that wasn't plugged into the vid card.

It's not the PSU. Everything that needs power is getting it. On one of the other forums I asked about this, there's a guy who has his card water cooled and it also makes this whining sound when it's folding.
