Just finished the game and I had some good fun but I found it a bit short.

What did you think when you finished it?

I didn't think it was that short. Definately not as short as Republic Commando.

I though it was too short, but still thought it was a great time. Prolly not worth the full 50 bucks but I had the money so meh. I don't really mind the lack of "boss" that so many people complain about, the ending was really creepy and I thought fit well with the mood of the game.

I found it boring, didn't finish it. Neither did I finish Q4. I found FEAR cheesy and Q4 too much like DOOM3

The last 2 levels were very claustrophobic and that tends to ruin my enjoyment a bit. Not a lot, but I get that feeling that I really want to see something new. So I sort of burned through them for the sake of seeing what would happen afterwards. When I realized that was the end of the game I kind of accepted it, nodded at the moments I enjoyed and quit.

This game is very gimmicky.....I have yet to find a game this whole year that will make me want to play it untill the end. That is until Oblivion comes out......Knowing me I'll say the same thing about that game.

I thought it was long enough.

Can someone explain the damn story to me?

***Spoliers****

The freaky girl was really a woman in a sphere that had twins. One was me and the other was the evil guy? The doctor was her husband (Wade) and his duaghter is then my sister and she was eaten by her brother, the evil ghost guy? Man, I must of missed something, that can't be right.

Well I can tell it how I understood it. The freaky girl was a woman with a strange mental disease that gave her psychic powers but also caused her discomfort or problems around people (I think it made her violent around others?). So they brought her in for testing and ended up using her children as tests also. The children could harness the powers better but something went wrong and they'd go insane. I thought it said she had something like 7 children or some rediculously large number but the 'process' was modified along the way. The first was the little girl, and another was the guy you were chasing, and you were the last, the perfect product.

Oh and that guy eats peoples brains to somehow gain knowledge of where the mother was being stored. He was looking for the mother to free her.

Anyhow, that may be wrong, but thats how it came off to me.

I'd like to see that wikipedia page confirmed by the company. It seems like it's a work in progress based on the discussion tab. I'd have to play the game again, but I thought the little girl was seperate from the 15 year old alma. I thought the little girl was the first experiment with alma gone wrong. It also seemed like the little girl and paxton were 'at ends' which doesn't make sense if they were both sharing the same mindset.

Weird.... the story telling methods were deffinitely pretty bad.

Ya, everyone gets a different story, they need to make it more clear. I was just killing crap, I had little idea why I was doing much of anything. I like a story, but I'd like some cutscenes to do some story telling.

Why would the Wade doctor out his daughter in a spere and make her pop out babies while his other daughter works for the same company? That's messed up.

Hey Todd

For some reason I found your explaination funny as h3ll. And I've never even played the game.

Freespace 2, one of the all time greats, left many large questions unanswered and for years... people have argued about the story and tried to fill the gaps with reasonably good suggestions that could fit.

Practically anyone that played Freespace2 is really dying for an explanation to some of the big questions left by the game. Sometimes its best if some questions are left when you finish a game.... it adds to the suspense of a sequel.

HL2 has tried to do the same but it doesnt particularly fit nicely. I think quite a lot of HL2 players ended up thinking 'uuuuh, what?' after it, I know I did.

I'll have to pick up F.E.A.R. when its the bargain bin. I need a new system and some other games which suit me better first.

Well, I think unexplained things can be cool, but when I say 'the story telling methods were deffinitely pretty bad', I mean the actual mechanics they used to give you information. You gain most of your information by listening to voicemails, having a guy talk to you through your headset and weird visions. Several chapters later, you have absolutely no way to review any of this data when it actually might make sense.

Oh right, didnt know.

That is quite poor. Area 51 labelled as a rather average FPS by most, had the ability to review data received in the field that forwarded the story or added background.

As Ive said in a recent thread discussing why games arent so good lately, its the smaller touches and quirks that some games are missing that make the gamer immersed in the atmosphere and the story. Games are always better when you understand whats going on but it leaves you with a couple of niggling questions to keep you guessing.

I personally very much enjoyed the game, especially the ending, and I was generally able to keep up with what was going on (although, as you say, it can be hard without any way to review what has happened so far). I'd still rate it up there, below HL2 but above Far Cry, Doom 3, etc.

I love the story-telling technique, even if it does leave you in the dark for a while and you can't get perspective on scenes until after you're done playing. It was a similar technique as the HL-series, with a few minor differences.
