F.E.A.R won't start- error message

Whenever I try to start F.E.A.R, an error message quickly pops up saying:
"The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\d3dx9_27.dll is not a valid
Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."
Any idea what this means? Is the dll file it mentioned related to DirectX9? I'm not sure how to fix this and have tried re-installing the game 3 times already with no success. I also tried upgrading to the latest patch. I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed in my 7900GT. My OS is Windows XP with SP 2. Thanks for any help.

Thanks to you guys I found the solution. I just needed to download the d3dx9_27.dll file online and replace the one in my directory. Now fear starts up perfectly!
