F-22A Raptor Aircraft Ready For Combat

NFS4

No Lifer
General Ronald E. Keys, Commander of Air Combat Command, has announced that the F-22A Raptor, the world?s only 5th generation fighter aircraft, surpassed a monumental milestone today when the United States Air Force declared that the Raptor has reached initial operational capability. The General made the historic announcement at Langley Air Force Base, VA.

The Air Force is now capable of deploying and supporting 12 F-22A Raptor aircraft anywhere in the world to execute air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The Raptor is also qualified to perform homeland defense missions when required.

The F-22 Raptor?s unique combination of stealth, speed, agility, situational awareness, air-to-ground and air-to-air combat capabilities make it unlike any other military aircraft in the world, increasing a pilot?s ability to engage targets with unmatched awareness. Rated ?Overwhelmingly Effective? by the USAF during Initial Operational Test and Evaluation, the Raptor is three times more effective than the F-15.

F22 Raptor

The F-22 Raptor is built by Lockheed Martin in partnership with Boeing and Pratt & Whitney. F-22 production takes place at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics facilities in Palmdale, CA.; Meridian, MS.; Marietta, GA.; and Fort Worth, TX, as well as at Boeing?s plant in Seattle, WA

hmm, they recently changed the designation again from F/A-22 to F-22? But anyway's, pretty cool that it's finally operational hehe.

Sweet... 🙂

I thought they were already in deployment though... but I don't know much about the Air Force at all...

I'm sure we could defeat any potential Earthly adversary's airforce with F-16s, except maybe the Canadians.

Can't America promote PEACE instead of WAR????

Peace through STRENGTH, you don't get respect by handing out lollypops to your enemies

mmm..lollypops

If we give them enough lollypops, steaks, mcdonalds, strippers and whores, they'll become really fat, lazy and useless. Then cut them off, and when they die off on their own, take their country.

i thought that was a plane that would never ever see the light of day

how long has it been in developement? does it usually take yonks to dev things like this? i know they still workin on the euro fighter, and what about the JSF?

It takes everyone a long time to build an entirely new plane (esp a stealth one).
First delivery of the F-35 (JSF) is due in 2008.

CaptnKirk should have found this thread by now....

$155 Mill each?

that includes all development costs. which probably includes a new way to manufacture an airplane. variable costs are probably much lower.

the stupid thing is that congress first balks at the price. so they decide to order less. so the per unit price goes up, and they balk at that and order less. so the per unit price goes up again, and then congress decides its too expensive and scraps the program.

well, maybe not with the F22, but i'm sure they've done it with several weapons systems in the past.

anywho, how'd they come up with '5th generation fighter aircraft'?

are they talking only about F series airplanes, and not old P series?

so that would be the first fighter aircraft, then the better ones that came out during korea, then the century series planes of vietnam (plus the F-4), then the F16/F18/F14/F15 planes?

But didn't the F-15 and F-16 both go into service in less than 5 years or so from the initial test flights?

I believe tha the ATF program was first announced by Reagan and the first fly-offs were in 1990. So here we are 16 years later...
