News Story

FYI - This happened yesterday afternoon so don't panic.

Did any other Portlanders hear the F-15s in the skies of the Rainy Rose City?

dunno about that, but some dumbass in detroit walked by a security guard while he was tying his shoe this morning and forced the evacuation of a couple terminals.

I wonder if he meant the US Bank tower, or the old First Interstate building? In any case, thankfully that plane would have done minimal damage.

I just hope he was bluffing and never actually intended to crash into a Portland building.

what about this part?

<< The roar of the jets caused dozens of residents to call 9-1-1 and local media outlets.
>>

why would you call 911 just for hearing a jet?

I haven't read the whole article yet, but maybe they went supersonic and the sonic boom might have freaked out people unaccustomed to hearing it.

I was outside of Forest grove last night, I could hear them and saw a couple, plain as day. It was LOUD. They were flying very low. Another problem that may have made people call 911, is they are filming "the hunted" in Portland right now, and they were doing explosions off the st Johns bridge... think about it, explosions near downtown Portland, F-15s scrambling everywhere, people were probably panicked. \

EDIT: I just read the KGW article which explains that

Cuz of this:

"It set off every car alarm in the entire neighborhood. It shook the entire ground, it shook the telephones, it shook everything. The chandelier was swinging," said Walter Lynch, who lives in North Portland.

Some residents near the University of Portland reported hearing explosions after the jets flew over. The explosions came from the set of the movie "The Hunted," where film crews were testing special effects, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland police spokesman.

If you're not familar with the noise that modern Jet Fighters produce, then you'd probably call 911 wondering what was going on too, or if they didn't see the fighter they might think than another airliner was "going down".

There used to be an annual air show at a smallish airport near my parents house and when the first jets would arrive 911 would receive several calls from people that didn't know what was happening.

I remember one year when a B52 flew directly over the house at low (I mean low) altitude. After it was gone we went out to check for skid marks on the roof, and to see if any shingles were missing. It shook everything.

Looking back, the experience was pretty cool...I can picture us looking up from the dinner table and stareing at the nose of the plane as it approached the house, then being extremely surprised at how loud it was.

It's a good thing that new jets can fly faster than sound....because if they didn't, they couldn't sneak up on anything. :)

As to why someone would run their plane into a building, I have no idea.

People call 911 for all the stupidest reasons. We had a very minor earthquake here in Vancouver last year. No damage, but you could feel it if you stopped and paid attention. If you were doing something active, you wouldn't have noticed. It was that weak. However, 911 was promptly flooded with calls from people asking if we just had an earthquake. Meanwhile, people who really needed 911 couldn't get through...

Am I the only one slightly concerned about that?

Back before the trees grew up around our house, my dad remembers looking down on a B52 that was flying through the valley.

Wish I could have seen that.

God, I hate idiots. I bet the conversation went like this.

Pilot's friend "so, where you flying today?"
Pilot: "dunno, just going for a quick flight for fun. Maybe I'll find a tall building and crash into it"
Pilot and friend "hahahaha"

Idiot overheard them "OMG, I better call 911!"

Everyone's a bunch of paranoid freaks.

Damn idiots, it's a wood plane built in 1946, not exactly an instrument of mass destruction.
