How did they hobble the 5.0?

See the Mustang's 412 horses.

They could have let the F-150 have 390 or so... instead of a measly 360...

Of course, as I said, they could have let the 3.5EB go as well, it's capable of much more output than it currently has.

Maybe they tuned it for more low end torque, which means less high end torque, which means lower peak HP

The Mustang seems to have more low end torque though, looking at various dyno runs on the net.

I would have spent the extra for the Ecoboost - amazing power train.

Didn't need it. There was no difference in MPG between the two and I'm not going to be towing more than the 5.0 can handle. I researched both motors extensively and the 5.0 was the best fit for me. $850 MSRP for the Eco was not worth the coin - Though I admit it probably would have been fun! -just not practical.

Also, the 5.0 is going to have far more options for power adders than the ecoboost ever will - should I ever want to waste the coin.

I think I'd choose the 5.0 as well, the eco-boost is too new, it may not have any bugs or quirks immediately but it probably will in the first 100k miles. The 5.0 has been around for a long time, it should hold fewer surprises. I had a F150 rental several months ago, I haven't driven all the competitors trucks, but I'd be comfortable buying an F150 without driving any of the others, it's a nice truck.

That 5.0 is actually brand new too. :) It is sold in the mustang though tweaked.

I'm shopping used full size pickups now. Just out of curiosity, what did this cost you base before all the BS with tax, tags, titles and other fees?

It's an expensive twin-turbo V-6 that doesn't really live up to the Eco part of it's name.

It's a shame they hobbled the 5.0 in the F-150 to try to sell those Ecoboost engines.

Actually though, if they would let the 3.5L EB loose, it would really be a monster.

I miss the straight six... I had it in a 4X4 model and got 16.5/23.8Hwy:p

$36,000 even out the door tax and tags. Considering that NC has 3% sales tax on car sales (we pay a yearly property tax on the vehicles so at time of sale we don't pay full sales tax), there is a $155 highway fee per first time registration, and plate fee of probably $50 or so... and maybe some other stupid fees at the DMV.

So the price was under 35k in the $34750 range for a truck with an MSRP of 42k. So I was close to $4k under dealer invoice. I feel I negotiated a good deal... They still made money. At the end of the day, I think I could have paid a little less, and they think I should have paid more.... And that is how a new vehicle purchase should feel for both sides.

Now I just need to spray in a bed liner (not sure how the new factory spray ins are as 2012 is the first year for them at Ford so I didn't have them build that in) and I'm going with the LineX as that is what I was very happy with in the Dakota. The LineX is probably only $50 more than what the factory spray was priced at. No biggy and I'll know what I'm getting.

I'm also adding a Retrax aluminum roll top bed cover which will be pricey but worth it.

This is the most I've ever paid for a vehicle so it was a gut check. I paid $19500 for the Dakota in December of 1998. Adjusted for inflation, that $19500 from back then would equal almost $27000 in today's money.... So I don't feel too bad. I am making a large down payment so my monthly payment will only be about $300 for 60 months and if work is solid, I'll have it paid off early at 3 years which is my typical habit... the 60 month loan ensures my payment is lower in case of life/career changes. :)

So... Now I wait. This is also the first time I've ordered versus finding one on the lot, and the reality of not having immediate gratification is now setting in, but I'll be ok. I'm keeping this for 15 years, So that further justified me fully getting everything I wanted in this and more. I've had my Dakota 13 years, and would have easily kept it a few more, but with the arrival of my daughter, I needed a crew cab. We've had her home a year and only having one vehicle for the car seat base has been toting her around an exercise sometimes... though not terribly difficult.
