Tip - sign up with an entity that does not charge the fee. AFAIK there is nothing stopping you from getting your pass from say the PA Turnpike Commission.

ezpass = ezpass = ezpass. it doesnt matter which state it comes from???

Strange but true. I, too, noticed that NJ charged a fee, but PA Turnpike commission did not. So my transponder has a PA Turnpike logo on it :)
ahh that was it. Even though I'm in NY, my pass came from NJ. They've been charging the fee for a while now.

I would pay $1 a month just to avoid the lines at the toll booths.

$1 is nothing. In fact, if more people drop EZ pass because of it, the better for the guys who have it.

I use my EZPass about 6 times a year, so I know I'll bitch, but still keep it. Hell, I went to a club last Friday in NYC that was charging $11 for a cranberry & vodka. Add a $1 tip and there's $12 right there.

What I don't like though is that you don't see these deductions when you log on to your account. I'm actually going to note my current balance and check in a month to see if they take the $1, since I don't plan on using my EZPass this month.

I thought this was discussed over at fw already. Most of the grandfathered plans don't have the monthly fee.

in houston, we get charged that $1/mo fee, but eveyrtime we go through a big toll, we save .25 off the regular price of the toll...so I go thru those like 100 times a month, so that's $25 saved right there.

In chicago, I think those who are on the highways daily love them. Recharge them online etc when it runs low.

edit: the fee is there cause they are losing money on the ezpass program apparently.

I bet they're still making money, just not as much :p

I'd say $12 a year for that convenience is well worth it if you actually travel on toll roads.

Hmm... I wonder if I'm grandfathered in. Is that $1 fee supposed to show up as a line item deduction when I check my account online?

i cant find the ezpass website for ny that doesnt require a $1/month fee.

thus i signed up with delaware. no $1 fee (if u receive statements via email), and they offer automatic discounts for their tolls, and a automatic bigger discount for frequent users.

maryland ezpass doesnt offer any discounts for infrequent use. (frequent users prepay, and must use in 30 days, else they lose it.)

Delaware's ezpass also has auto discounts for nj + ny tolls. if you want to get on the bigger discounts for frequent users of nj/ny tolls, you gota apply via that state's ezpass website. (like md, you prepay, and must use within xx days, else it's forfeit.)

http://www.ezpassde.com/discount.html

Other facilities offering automatic discounts for patrons using an E-ZPass transponder include the following:
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority
The New Jersey Turnpike
Port Authority of New York & New Jersey:
George Washington Bridge
Goethals Bridge
Bayonne Bridge
Outerbridge Crossing
Lincoln Tunnel
Holland Tunnel
South Jersey Transportation Authority:
Atlantic City Expressway
Metropolitan Transportation Authority:
Triborough Bridge
Throgs Neck Bridge
Bronx-Whitestone Bridge
Verranzano Bridge
Brooklyn Battery Tunnel
Queens Midtown-Tunnel
Henry Hudson Bridge
Cross Bay Bridge
Marine Parkway Bridge

so hold up ... you only pay $1/mo for this thing? and what, do they charge you at the end of each month for the total times you went through the toll and add this $1 on top of it?

they have EZ pass when I go to my dads house (crossing the chesapeake bay bridge), but i never knew how it worked.

They went and doubled EVERY toll in the state. BUT if you have an EZpass then you get it for the old price. bah

why pay $1/month when it's free if you sign up at a different state. it works all the same.

the only reason i see to sign up from nj/ny ezpass site and pay the $1/month fee is if you want to use that state's frequent toll discount plan.
