ezpass allows you to pay tolls electronically. you don?t have to stop and pay cash to travel through toll facilities. Instead, a small transponder mounted on the inside of your windshield automatically deducts tolls from a pre-paid account.

They instituated a $1/month fee last year. :(

i dont travel to NYC that often, but i'll keep it.

i wont like it, but i'll pay it since it's the price of convience. it's MUCH faster to use ezpass lanes then regular lanes.

anyone know why they instituted the fee? they were doing fine for a decade with no fees.

edit:
$1/month fee, not $1 annual

How is a $1/month an annual fee?

Is this in NY? I haven't been paying attention to my EZPass, but that's just asinine. Makes me want to consider going back to a toll booth attendant, since I don't use it all that often.

Which is it man? Monthly or annually? Either way its no big deal, when tolls are already hitting double digits anyway here cross-PA.

just blow through them. Thats what we did in Houston in a rental car. I know it took the picture because I saw the bright light turn on behind us as we went through it.
I wasn't driving, but we were really sick of stopping to throw change in every few miles.

Bastards. I just logged into my account, where they show the deductions made, and of course there's no mention of this fee being taken out. However, when I read the PDF of the terms, there's the Port Authority monthly fee of $1 there. :|

I think I heard once that NJ overestimated the number of violations they would get so they were short ==> fee necessary. Any confirmation?

is this for NYC residents only? I live upstate with an EZPass. I haven't noticed a $1 fee. I'll log in this evening and check again, though.

Do you pay more byt paying the $1/mo fee or by not using it and wasting more gas sitting at tolls and things like that?

I was wondering why the Ohio Turnpike hadn't adopted EZ-Pass yet. I guess they must have seen this coming. For $1 a month, it's not worth it if you only use toll roads occasionally.

Tip - sign up with an entity that does not charge the fee. AFAIK there is nothing stopping you from getting your pass from say the PA Turnpike Commission.

remember when using ezpass entitled you to a discount on the bridges and tolls? that went away real fast.

edit: the fee is there cause they are losing money on the ezpass program apparently.

Yes I found this out at least a couple years back (I remember because I told people at the office about it) and that was the reason I returned my EZPASS. I had used it like twice a year if that. $12/yr. was too much. Did they just announce this ? That was the sole reason I returned mine so long ago.

And returning it cost me shipping charges via certified mail or something of the sort.

actually it does when it comes to fees. I was told when I got mine at the NY State Fair this past summer that there was no fee if I signed up in NY but there is a fee for signing up in NJ.

No, the tolls cost a certain amount for the given toll. The $1 a month is just to have the EZ Pass device.

Strange but true. I, too, noticed that NJ charged a fee, but PA Turnpike commission did not. So my transponder has a PA Turnpike logo on it :)
