EZ-Pass Questions for NY/NJ

Was looking to get an EZ-Pass as cash lines have become increasingly longer and fewer to find. On the EZ Pass website it says under fees:

16. Schedule of Deposits/Administrative Fees

PANYNJ monthly Account service fee $1.00

Does this mean they charge $1.00 a month just to have it even if its not used? Tried to call them, but there was a 45-min hold time.

Thanks in advance.

Some agencies have imposed periodic account maintenance fees on their subscribers. After New Jersey began losing money with the E-ZPass system, a monthly account fee of $1.00 was implemented on July 15, 2002[24] and is still in effect for both individual and business accounts.[25] The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also charges a monthly individual account fee of $1.00.[26] On July 1, 2009, the Maryland Transportation Authority began charging a $1.50-per-month fee to accountholders.[27]

So, sadly - if you're from Jersey- it appears so.

Yes. Its a buck a month -- you save way more than that in off peak discounts and gas saved while not waiting in the cash lines.

I think that admin fee was killed off. I haven't paid any admin fees ever (been a member since 2001.)

If the government wants to track you there are easier ways than tolls.

How so? what's easier than a device you pay to carry, and it reports your location when you go through a toll? That's just for now. It would be trivial to put receivers everywhere to read the devices. No thanks.

This.

And the government could only "track where you are" using EZ Pass when you are on a toll road. Hardly efficient.

Not to mention if you don't want to be "tracked" you..... Wait for it..... Wait for it.... Take it off the windshield!

The why doesn't interest me. The government already has more power than the Constitution allows, and I won't voluntarily hand them any more. I don't care if they want the information to mail me dollar bills every week. I don't want the government to have it.

Edit:

That's a genius move. So you get the tracker, and still pay cash for your toll :^S

No.... When you don't want to be tracked... But if you prefer to pay double all the time more power to you.

LOL the discounts aren't that great. You save $2 crossing the river at off-peak times only, and about 10-20% IIRC on the TPK and GSP

Sue me for not knowing NY toll prices then :p I know in some states it is double. Kind of besides the point though, its pointless to just waste money for no reason other than paranoia.

GWB: CASH: $12 all times. Peak 6-10am, 4-8pm(m-f): $9.50 EZ Pass, Off Peak: $7.50 worth it? probably.

Thanks all for the info.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in Staten Island is $13.00 cash and $9.60 for EZ-Pass for example.

Non-tri-state-area peoples, read that ^

I'm sure some ATOTers would have a heart attack over a $12 toll

Many people would also have heart attacks if they knew how much higher the average salary was in the area.

Seriously, however. it was $8 until last year, the Port Authority is trying to support that mess that is the WTC project from toll revenue. the AAA is currently suing about the tolls. The GWB turned a significant profit even before the increase.
