Sorry for the third post in a row, but I must to admit to a lapse in sanity. That @home member site that I mentioned in the above post is easily accessed though either a different name or an ip address which can be gotten by pinging it from a true @home IP.

one problem solved, maybe i'll like the router after all if they all end up taking a second to figure out.

i took the time to look further into the usb prob.

i didnt evan know that there were 10/100 external usb NIC's

that solves that.

Annyone think that a pci NIC would be better than the USB in terms of performance?

It's not just that there are 10/100 external USB NICs, it's that there are external USB cable/DSL modems.

Ordered mine form Outpost on the 19th and received it on the 21st. It's up and running with a call to SMC on how to get my cable modem to see it. The printer port works great also. The router has been running since the night I got it.

considering that USB craps out at 12Mbs, a USB NIC would be fine for a 10Mbs LAN (or cable modem), but anything above that would, of course, suck.

PCI is certainly the way to go, if possible.

Got mine from Onvia.com today. Very nice. Easy to set up, print server is quick. Well worth the $80. Now I'm all set to pick up the Dreamcast ethernet adapter.

As far as USB goes, remember that you share the bandwidth with every other USB device. So USB networking is not ideal.

Why not get it at Outpost.com and use dashbar or ebates for an additional 3 off? It is 99.95 there so overnight, and the same price...not too bad.

Just jumping in here... although rather late.

I just ordered DSL from Winfire a week ago. And they only offered two DSL modem options. An internal PCI and an external USB. I chose the USB and proceeded to look for a router that would accept USB. A week later, I can't find one. So tomorrow I'll call them up again and cancel the modem order.

Now my question is, all the network cards I have are Linksys cards. I have the choice of the Linksys one, and this one... which one do you guys recommend? I've heard great things about this one, but since everything else I have is Linksys, I figured it wouldn't hurt to go with the same company. Well... Outpost does have it, but I can't use the $30 off coupon. I might just get the SMC from Outpost, and save myself the trouble from having to deal with the rebate.

I was just looking at the Linksys rebate form:

And they have a USB to 10/100 adapter! The model number is USB100TX. Now my question is, is it USB to RJ-45 or RJ-45 or bi-directional? I'm guessing both right? So in theory, if I buy this thing, I can connect a USB DSL modem to the adapter, then using the adapter, connect that to an RJ-45 ethernet cable and then finally connect the cable to the router. Am I right? I sure hope so... it would save me the trouble of having to pick out a DSL modem by myself and just grab the one that Winfire sells.

Checking Outpost, they don't have the one that Linksys sells, but they have these two:

and

If it works the way I described it, I'd probably go for the SMC one, to use with the SMC router. Can anyone verify? Will I need to do anything special to get the router to recognize the signal from a USB based DSL modem?

You can connect it that way but it won't work.
In simple terms:
You need to connect the USB100TX to a "host" as it is a "slave".
And the USB Modem itself is a "slave".
So you face a "slave" to a "slave", and that won't work.

I see alot of info being tossed back and forth about this router on the forum, so i'll share my experience with it. Im running it on a cable modem (adelphia.net) and it works great, the features and speed it offers make it well worth the money. This unit is made by a company called amit. www.amit.com.tw/downloads will bring you to the page for manuals, the latest firmware, print server drivers, and lastly the have a fax driver available. The model you need to cross reference is the HiP-400E. IMO this is a good little router for the money:Q
