I think with a Hub you need the main computer with the DSL/Cable connection on for the other computers to access the internet. With a router the connection is held and whatever computer you turn on that is connected to the router will have the internet access. Thus you don't have to leave a computer on all the time. Also you get a firewall and a print server with the SMC. I now share my laser printer with the 4 computers in the house. No more unplugging or transferring files to print my jobs.

hey- the deal is still on. the smc barricade is $99 at buy.com and then with a $10 off coupon....

could annyone link me to a coupon for more? not that long ago there were $20 off coupons.
thanks

----EDIT----

HEY I HAVE AN IDEA!!!!

for those of you that are trying to decide between the linksys or the barricade i have some news for ya!

Amazon has the linksys for $150 and a $20 mail in rebate so total is $129.94
link to linksys 4 port router at Amazon.com
BUT heres the catch- spend $50 more and you can use the $50 off 200 coupon.

IN other words you can pay 30 bucks more at amazon than at buy.com ($100 after 30/150 coupon) but you would also get $50 of electronics.

huanthi: Amazon also sells cat 5 utp cables for like 12 bucks for 50 feet. Dont get a crimping tool, it aint worth it. (ps if you are going to get the linksys from amazon, you can also get all you other networking needs here for like 2 or 3 comps, and it would all in all only cost $130 bucks.

Can you guys answer me a Question? I have one cable modem will this device connect two home computers on one cable modem??

mustanggt: um thats kinda the idea 😉. you would also need some cables and 2 Network Inter Face Cards (NIC's) to hook them to gether. But then you would be networked, and could share files and printer with both computers. It would be cool.

Well I allready have one NIC card so I would just need another for second computer?? I have no clue how these things work but that would be cool connecting both computers plus this router adds firewall for more proctection from hackers.

Thats what im saying. As far as i know you would only need one more nic and cables.

A good deal for you would be to get the Linsys (which is faster?) from amazon.com. then spend $ on cat 5 cables (how much do you need, are your computers in different rooms?)you would need 2. one small one to go from router to a computer, and a longer one to go to the other computer, depending on how far away it is. Then buy the one NIC and maybe buy something else in electronics to get the price over $200,
then use the amazon electronics coupon to take $50 off, and then there is the $20 mftr rebate.

tadah! networked, and firewalled and set for 130 buckeroos.

Linksys has been met with mixed reveiws from its users as opposed to SMC. That being said, in addition to being a broadband router, the SMC is also a print server allowing you to print to the same printer independently from any windows machine connected to it. As far as the speed is concerened, I do belive barricade is faster, but even if I am wrong the maximum speed for both of them is higher than the maximum speed on most cable systems.

I have $107 in staples cash card but they dont have this one. they dont have much at all I need to get this staples cash card turned into cash so I can get me this router.

Thats interesting. you are the first person that i have heard say that smc is faster. i have heard 2 or 3 people say that linsys was faster though. Why else would these people get the linksys from buy.com when it is $10 more expensive than the smc, and thats taking into account that the linksys deal has a $30 coupon and the smc uses the $10 coupon.

Interesting... anyone else??

Also doesnt the linksys have print sharing too? why wouldent it??

😱
Sorry about the VERY DEAD $30 off AMEX links I gave above.
I used it Friday and it was good

LEN
thanks for catching it

I just ordered my smc7004 from buy.com 2 days ago. The price is $97.95, bought 2pks cdrs the imations 80min 700mb are $21.95 for 50cdr with 25 color jewel cases and some other little stuff. Use the 30off150 and get free shipping also.

Now if only my local company can get my dsl up and going.

I've been waiting for 3 months already.:|

In regards to the speeds of these I'd like to again point out that the maximum on both the Linksys and the SMC is above the specification of most broadband connections therefore you will not be able to saturate either of the two routers with bandwidth. As far as which one is faster you can judge by yourself from this comparison table, but it is clearly seen on there that when comparing the 4 port Linksys to a 4 port SMC that
Linksys maximum throughput is
WAN-LAN
3.1 Mbps

LAN-WAN
2.9 Mbps

and for the SMC it is
WAN-LAN
4.0 Mbps

LAN-WAN
4.0 Mbps

To answer your question about print sharing. It is possible with any switch, hub or even peer to peer provided your printer is connected to a computer that is acting as a print server. The SMC actually is a print server within of itself and has a parallel port to which you can connect your printer thus allowing you to print independantly of whether or not other computers on the network are on or off.

I consider what I said to be unbiased due to the fact that I do not own either of the products, but have read reviws, comparisons, and user reactions to both of them.😎

edit: I can only speculate that the reason that people are willing to pay more for the Linksys is due to brand recognition and generally out of low-cost networking products it does tend to stand out; however, I have heard better things about the SMC router in terms of not locking up and not dropping DSL connections, but with later firmware versions Linksys seems to have resolved some of the issues. In either case all else being equal the fact that the SMC has one extra feature being a print server that Linksys does not provide.

Len,

You're right on the money. its sure is a lot cheaper than to get a jetdirect card for the printer. As for setting up a pc as a print server, its wasted a pc or its slow that pc down.
The SMC cost less than the Linksys. buy.com has it for 97.95.

Good info
I am runnind a Linksys 100 hub (3 systems attached)
(Brother HL 1240 Laser. they offered an optional Network model,
but I believe it was $100 more that is ridiculous.
My computer serve as the Print Server
It wont print when my system is in standby, Have a WOL card
(wake up on Lan) but it has never worked So when my wife prints
it never works leaving her frustrated

The Point: This would be Ideal

Thank
The Point is: This product would be Ideal

that would be a no on the USB cable modem. well... not in the manner it was intended for or would prove to be of any use.

basically the intended wiring is such:

connection device===ethernet cable===router===ethernet cable===clients.

The connection device in your case would be your cable modem, except you couldn't connect it to the router because it doesn't have ethernet port, but just usb.

Of course you could put a second nic in your computer and keep that pc on along with the router and serve off of that contraption, but then you might as well simply use any NAT program.

moral of the story is such "unless you have to don't get internal, wireless, infrared, firewire, or usb networking products since most ofthem don't integrade or scale very well with the existing ethernet infrastructure" 😉

Len- i guess i kinda knew that i couldent do that, its just that when i looked to the back of the comp to see whare the nic was i realized that there was no nic 😱. sheesh a usb cable modem... maybe if i call @home they can give me another model... ori could do the hub thing and network... annyone else that is reading this have similar experiances?

Has anyone recieved their's yet? I ordered mine Dec.16th and it hasn't been shipped yet... I've tried calling and e-mailing but no responses. I really despise Onvia's Customer Service. It's kind of like an oxymoron.

Impact55:

I got mine from Onvia today. Low an behold a pack of paperclips came in a separate oversized box. The UPS had a chuckle when I told him what was in the smaller box.

Just installed the sucker. I got to admit it is a no brainer. have not had the chance to try out some functions like printer sharing, but generally it seems to be doing exactly what was advertized. On the other hand the router did not leave the best impressions on me. I have to say though I should have expected as much it being exactly what it is a NAT router. Pretty much no difference than runing something like Sygate on your spare machine except a lot cheaper.

The problem arises though from the fact that @home being my ISP allows access to member services sites which are accessable only to its members as determined by the ip. well, needless to say none of the clients of this router are awarded a true wan ip, therefore i'm locked out of those sites until i connect a pc directly to the cable modem. other programs will plainly not budge with NAT no matter what until they get their real world ip. that's where the advantage of runing software NAT comes in, because at least the machine runing NAT has a true ip. as far as the other features, it is plainly obvious that a "real" computer can accomplish much more than this router.

i'll play around with this thing some more and will probably going to end up using it despite my whining, but it will deffinatly take some tinkering around to get all of my beloved 😉 programs working behind this router. going to wait a month or so until i cancel that second ip which is costing me $8/month.
