Eyes Wide Shut

I just watched that movie "Eyes Wide Shut" with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and I must say...I'm incredibly dissapointed.

AFter the scence with "The house"...nothing happened. At all...nothing.

Did I miss something?

Its been quite a few years since Ive seen it, but if I remember correctly that movie ends very weirdly. It just kinda... ends. Very odd movie.

I liked it.
The movie was about human sexuality, and to give different perspectives on how women and men look at sex.
Like all kubrick movies, most stuff is open to interpretation.

I can understand that much, but the movie played on as if it were leading up to some huge climax, but, no...it was all...fake?

Are you sure that's the movie you were watching? There WAS a climax. You just missed it. Watch again.

What kind of climax are we talking about here....?

The revelation at the end to his wife. He is loosening his tie and the piano is banging away, he looks over and sees the mask on the bed.

Its what the whole movie was building towards.

I am almost sure this movie was made purely for Nicole Kidman to be nakkey thats it. It was weird, interesting, made me think.

The first time I saw it years ago in the theater, I thought it was bad, bad, bad. But then, a co-worker and I were discussing it, so I rented it. The second time I looked at it differently, and I thought it was very, very intriguing.

There was definitely no censorship here.
there was still nudity. they just cg'd in furniture and stuff in the orgy scenes.
Are you serious?
So you mean the so-called "uncensored" orgy scene I downloaded in MPG from my file-sharing network is different than the supposedly "unrated" DVD I watched?

It's all about sexual fantasy and its power over your life and state of mind. The thing is, all the little vignettes end frustratingly, with no conclusion or explanation. These are glimpses into subterranean stories/fantasies; the junky girl at the party, kidman's revelation of her desire and willingness to fvck that dude, the whore in the costume shop, and finally the big orgy. All of these vignettes have some form of pretense and dishonesty involved that fvcks it all up and makes it end frustratingly. In the end he comes clean and is honest, and kidman replies, "we need a good fvck" (or something like that). If you are just honest, all these problems don't appear.

I also loved the cinematography and use of color. Very saturated reds and blues are used throughout the movie. I think of the reds as denoting the passion and build up of the sexual tension, and the blues as the frustration and anticlimax that comes with any of the problems that arise.

Well, that's my interpretation. The beautiful thing about kubric movies is that they give you so much room for interpretation. I think that EWS is kubric's most underrated movie, and hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves.

Made me think a hell of a lot too, then I got to the end and realized that no explanations were offered...

Welcome to a Stanley Kubrick movie. He gives you the tools, but you have to do the work yourself. His movies make some points, but mostly make topics for debate or insight.

The book that Eyes Wide Shut was taken from was "Traumnaville", which translated to English is "Dream Story". In the book it is clear that Tom Cruise's wild adventures are purely his fantasies. Kubrick made this less clear, but by knowing that simple fact, it changes the dynamic of the movie and how you view the scenes.

I can go on and on, but the beauty of a Kubrick flick is that you can sit and think on them for a long time.

I could imagine if I watched the movie again, knowing how it ends, it would be better.

But should a movie really be like that? You shouldn't have to see something twice to appreciate it.

Actually, Ive found the best of movies get better with each viewing. A movie shouldnt be like a prostitute, you use it once to get off then move on. It should be like dating, you stick around, dig deeper and make it an enjoyable long lasting experience.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the most recent movie to come out that comes closer to perfection with each viewing.
