eye problems

I've noticed for a few years that my vision at distance is very out of focus. it's been getting worse gradually. now it's to the point where I have headaches all the time and am squinting at everything even not THAT far away. in other words, whenever I'm not looking at something very close to my eyes (monitor, book, etc), I have to squint and strain.

I got an eye exam for the first time today.
the dr said I have "better than 20/20 vision" and that I'm only a tiny bit nearsighted (so little that it doesn't warrant correction), but attributed my problem to to focus adjustment. he said my muscles adjust the focus very very slowly and that they're also too accustomed to staring at things up close. so he prescribed reading/near field glasses that I'm supposed to use whenever I'm looking at something up close. and supposedly my eye muscles will get into the habit of focussing at distance.

that all sounds fine and dandy to me, except that wouldn't that mean that after a few minutes of walking around (seeing things at distance), my vision would be crisp? it's not. even if I haven't looked at something up close for hours, I strain my eyes until it hurts.

anybody have a better explanation? I think I'm going to go to another optometrist to get a second opinion, but I thought you guys might have some ideas.

Hrmm...honestly, I'd trust the optometrist's opinion more than most people on here; he's had a bit more training. Like you said, if nothing else then get a second opinion, but I'm sure at least some of what the doc said is correct somehow.

Try going to an opthamalogist, they are better trained than optometrists. Also, stay away from the docs at the chain stores like LensCrafters since you apparently have an unusual vision problem.

Sorry, but it sounds like you keep having strokes. Seriously, get a second opinion.

I second both of those suggestions. I've been wearing glasses since 2nd grade so I know a thing or two about eye docs. It sounds to me like you need glasses/contacts (your vision problem sounds similar to mine), but then again I'm no eye doc. :p Did the doc say how long it would take to retrain your eye muscles? Maybe you should wait it out a few days and then give the doc a call if it still doesn't get better.

well he said wait a month and then call

oh and I forgot to mention, he also said it's particularly important when I'm on the comp for long periods to take a short break every 15mins to just stare at stuff off in the distance. so I got one of those progs that reminds you to take health breaks

glacoma? maybe you have too much pressure in the eye, I'd go see an opthamologist like others have said, they can diagnose things that an optometrist cannot. Seems odd that you'd have better than 20/20 but have to strain to see far away.

You should ask these questions of your eye doctor until you understand his answer or he understands your question.
