Ok, that's simple enough. How do I avoid this problem next time I do a fresh install? I'm assuming the problem is because I wasn't able to format the unused partition when doing the XP install which I wondered about at the time. But I assumed that the partition would at least show up under properties and I'd have the option of formating it there since it does list a format option for hdd's

next time you format the partitions will still be there
if you format c:\ then d:\ will not be touched and all info will still be there
if you want to format d:\ you can just right click on the drive and format it from windows

if the partition is there then all you have to do is format the drive from windows to make use of it

btw which os are you using?
if your using xp...then partition the disk with fdisk
go to start \ control panel \ performance and maintainance \ administrative tools \ computer management \ disk management and select the partition in there and format
