I just picked up a laptop with Win2K. My Win98 desktop system shuts down in about 2 seconds. My Win2k laptop takes about 20 seconds (no exageration). Is this normal?

It's weird, but I experienced the same thing when I installed Win2k on my machine. After 2 months or so, my computer started to shut down in about 8 seconds or so (much better than it used to be). I don't know why....

Make sure Outlook Express is not open. That will make it take forever to shut down. Be aware that the shutdown process of Win2K is much more involved than the other Windows variants because of all the settings that must be saved.

Make sure that you don't have Win2k set to clear the page file after shutdown since this deletes the entire file. Also if you enabled this for security reasons, then you shouldn't disable it.

Dkozloski said it all. Good one. Make sure you have no "real programs" open. Like Outlook, IE, Access, etc. When I hit "shut down" the only things open are Via Hware monitor and Norton AV. No probs. Takes about 20 seconds for me to shut down.

ps
AND, UNLIKE Win98, when I power back up, everything is EXACTLY how I left it! :Q What a concept!

When I shut down there are no "real Programs" open, other than Norton Antivirus which I leave running in the system tray. Sounds like 20 seconds to shut down isn't that atypical, so I guess I'll just have to get used to it. Tx for the feedback!
