Extremely disappointed in FIOS internet

Dari

Lifer
All the hype regarding their internet service is just that. I have TWC in my apartment. Went to visit some relatives who have FIOS. The internet there was ok. Went to download some torrents and it was much much slower than TWC. Now, Verizon does not produce content so they have no reason to care what anyone says as far as torrents are concerned. TWC, OTOH, is always harping about it. But the Verizon internet was worse than my $20/month plan. The clarity of their cable channels, however, is much better than TWC's.

Never bothered with the uploads.

Speedtest screenshots or GTFO

Kidding, mine is always 25/5. (Though I'm paying for 15/5)

TWC I got 25/1.

Hehe, I just found an old screenshot I posted, I guess I got way less than 25 on TWC, so in my case Verizon is quite a bit faster. (Although I'm pretty sure before I left TWC it was up to 25, maybe they upgraded after 2010)

I also just realized my wireless is messed up, I must be sharing channels with neighbors. I only got 4 DL when I tested on the wireless. Time to fire up the wifi analyzer app and switch channels again.

Yes, because its highly improbable that these folks didn't just have a very basic internet package from Verizon.

dumb post, using torrents to gauge internet/connection speed?

same torrent?
same peers?
same torrent client with same settings?
same router/firewall/network setup?
same computer/hardware/os/configuration?
etc etc too many random factors, go run a speedtest.

Remember, most residential ISPs screw you on upload. When you download torrents, chances are the person they're coming from only has like 1meg upload if that. Not everyone has fios. I wish I could get it here, but never going to happen. From an ISP's perspective it only makes sense to roll it out in high density cities.

Maybe they have the cheap bargain FIOS. I've had FIOS twice - cancelled it to get TWC. Switched back 3 months ago - best decision ever. If you think TWC is better than FIOS, you are smoking something.

I have Uverse. I would rather have FIOS, but it's not available by me. 5mbit upstream would be a HUGE improvement over the 1.5-2mbit I get here ....

I laugh at their FIOS misfortune! They will never live the Time Warner sweet life I am, all for a mere $60 a month for 20mpbs.

same torrents. Not sure which package they had but they had tv and internet. That's got to upgrade them to a decent speed, right?

not unless they have some package deal.

For 70 bucks I can get 50Mb/s download with FIOS here.

What difference will 15 or 50mb/s make when the torrents were downloading on TWC's system at 1.7MB/s and on Verizon's system at 236KB/s. TWC was tested at 14.79Mb/s. I thought Verizon's FIOS was faster and more consistent.

I didn't like Fios either. Youtube, Google services and most streaming sites were slower than TWC. Online gaming also had higher erratic latency. Their routing must not be very good in my area.

The only benefit was steady speeds during downloading large files such as from Steam. I also disliked having to use their POS router if I wanted TV service.

I think the point you are missing is that torrents are NOT the way to test speed. They are inconsistant and reliant on who you are actually connected to. Just a hint...downloading from Steam is not a good measure either....

That is very obviously torrent dependent some torrents I get 40kb/s others I get 2.5MB/s

All on my home FIOS connection, because torrents don't just go full speed

Who cares when you're actually using the product? It wasn't just torrents. It was basic browsing. TWC felt peppy whereas FIOS wasn't. I know a lot about Time Warner's system because I've worked with the firm before. From everything I've heard, outside the home, FIOS was more modern. Inside the home, in order to save money, they resorted to coaxial (but that's just for the television). So, all the fancy speeds people are posting are no different than mullet-heads bragging about their straightline king American Big Iron high HP Mustang or Corvette or Viper or whatever the fuck. But when it comes to actual racing, or in the case of internet speed, there were other factors that determine the outcome.

Fact is, I can see myself getting FIOS if I was running a business where uploads are important or if I need a 2nd internet access in case one goes down. But, this little non-scientific real world test I just did over the weekend shows that, at the very least, TWC has stepped up their game and FIOS is not all it's been cracked up to be. I definitely won't make it a priority if I have to move.

I used to have Time Warner and it was very unreliable and obviously slower than my current FiOS connection. I love FiOS and get above the "rated" speeds I'm supposed to get.

I'm happy so far with both browsing and download speeds with FiOS. I had Cablevision/Optimum Online before for about 10 years, and they weren't bad, either, but with slower standard speed, 16/5 actual in my case.

I don't know how much the experience of the OP is dependent on location (or specific setup), but for the NYC suburbs (at least Rockland and Westchester) everyone I know is pretty happy with Verizon or Optimum. I've heard mixed things about TWC in the city, though, and I've heard very few people praise it.

I'm not claiming that's the consensus or that it's scientific, but from what I've read most people are fairly happy with FiOS.

Yep sucks.

This is actually unusually poor, I'm normally right at my 150/65 rated speed and with better than 15 ms ping.

$100 a month.
