UPDATED after minendos advice. NOW WITH NEW RAM(2 * 256)

the budget is 500 dollars....for EVERYTHING besides speakers and a keyboard. all she wants to do is basic windows acitvities(word, and what not..) and to play counter strike and day of defeat. will the inboard nforce2 video be suficient to play those games flawlessly?

and other ammendmants?

btw, w/shipping it comes to 500.14 🙂 so please, dont offer suggestions to make things "better" i would if i could.

thanks

Buy a cheaper case. Also, if you choose not to buy a retail chip I suggest the SVC GC68 heatsink. Only $4.99 at SVC.com and it does one hell of a job.

See the second case.

I've got the same case with the 300W included PSU powering my overclocked TBred 1700+.

why aren't you going with a 1700+ for $41 and that Speeze(60mm fan)..ugh...grab the GC88is she on a lan ..? modem..? a cdrw drive is a better choice than an ordinary cdrom ...minendo's case choice is good..airfow is pretty good once you add some 80mm case fans..

lol, you seemed to not have listend to waht i said. the athlon 2000 is a better deal simply because there will be NO overclocking and the price on it is very good. 14 bucks for a heatsink? i hope your joking. "a cdrw drive is a better choice than an ordinary cdrom " -- NO SH!T SHERLOCK. the problem is $$$$$$ re-read the fact the fact that i cant go over 500 bucks.

you lose

You could not order the cdrom and use the money plus the left over money ($500-total) and pick up a cdrw from one of the B&M stores. You should be able to keep the remaining system (minus cdrom) and pick up a 52x cdrom for the leftover amount after rebate.

i wouldnt take it even if the offer still stood. i want to order everything from newegg as i previously stated.

You might consider different DDR memory (perhaps Crucial 512 PC2700 for $71). Also, you can get better prices on a 17" monitor and Hard Drive if you have an OfficeMax or Bestbuy around. I picked up a 17 inch KDS monitor for $82 and a WD 40GB drive for $30 after rebate. You could plow those savings into a 2100+, a real mouse, or a CD burner. You can pick up a 52x24x52x burner at OfficeMax or Bestbuy for $20 after rebate on a weekly basis.

WHy are you so determined to get all from Newegg??? Makes no sense if you have the opportunity to save $$ locally. But then, maybe you dont have that opportunity...but you should say so, instead of dumping on someone who is trying to help you.

Newegg is good and all, but more $$ in the pocket is better.

I wouldn't go for an onboard video solution, my guess is downgrading the CPU, dropping the motherboard to a ECS K7S5A, putting in 256 of memory BUT using the remaining money to buy a video card would give the best performance if wanting to play any games.

Did you even read the list of games that are going to be played? 😛 CS + DoD = the nF2 IGP will be just damned fine. 🙂

Directron has the Shuttle MN31N for $53 for the month of June. It's Matx and has very little overclocking features but it has the MCP-T southbridge unlike the Soltek board you're planning on using. If you stop being rude and open up your mind you'll quickly realise you can build yourself a cheaper higher quality computer if you shop around.

Why not get a boxed processor? It comes with a heatsink that way. No sense going nuts if you don't want to overclock it. And CounterStrike runs just fine on a P3 800, heck even a p2 333 (no eye candy). I would always choose a video card over internal, but that's me. I was going to say get a Dell, but after perusing their site, they have bastardized their machines as of late. Why the nForce2 motherboard? I think they're overrated myself. You could get a cheaper KT400 board. Also, since you're only getting one stick of RAM, you have no need for dual channel. These are my opinions on what you could do. Of course, I haven't priced any of this and since you're set on getting stuff from Newegg, you could be paying more than you have to

I'm going to pretend you didn't just trashtalk the nF2 in favour of a KT400. :Q

Where else are you going to find quality integrated LAN, DTS audio, and onboard video that doesn't suck? 😀

the cheap premiere 300 watt case will suffice, its like 20$, the one i got works fine on a 350$ computer (no monitor, nforce2)

1700+, 80gb, chaintech cheapo nforce2 all integrated, cd-rom, heatsink fan, and 2 case fans, 256mb pc2100, decent comp, no speed demon, plays sc3k, basically wat he needed it for, all the rest is word editing.

Naw, I was jst offering a cheaper alternative. You can get a KT4V at Newegg for $69. I don't think CounterStrike needs DTS audio. You got me on the integrated video. As far as LAN, the KT4V has you covered. For the money he would save, he could ditch that crappy mouse or perhaps pick up a CDRW

The games will run flawlessly on that integrated GeForce MX. CS will run on almost anything (it's based off a very old game, Half Life, with a very old graphics engine), and DoD isn't very intensive. You should even be able to play games like BF1942 and CC:Generals.

I say drop the floppy. Get a 1700+. Then get a CDRW instead of a 2000+. The optorite 48X24X48 goes for like.. 35$. Then add on 5$ shipping. By dropping the floppy and going for the cheaper CPU, you've prettty much made up the difference.

couldnt have said it better myself. and about not getting a retail heatink....the retail heatsinks tend to be low quality and i want to be sure there is no heat-related instabilities in the system
