Extreme oc temperatures

Hey.. Got a bit of a problem here.

I purchased a used Opteron 165 some time ago, and it seems to work fine. But as soon as I overclock and do some heavy load (currently transcoding a dvd), it jumps beyond 80* C (176* F), and I've just installed the new Scythe Mine cooler. The "paradox" is that the head pipes are nowhere near hot. I can touch them without getting burned..

The one I got the cpu from said that he had removed the heat spreader. He then re-attached it before sending it.

Any ideas?

Well, motherboards (*cough* ASUS) are notorious for reporting overly high temps, so it is most likely not a CPU issue. What I would do is just take off the heatspreader and run it w/o it. If whoever you bought it from had taken it off and mounted it incorrectly the second time, it could negatively affect temps. Running it without the IHS might provide better heat transfer anyway, so I would try that.

Just so you know, if your CPU was really at 80C, your opteron would have gone bye bye a long time ago, so it's probably your motherboard.

Ok.. Heard about that some time ago. But It's a DFI LANParty UT CFX3200-DR. I tried to disable the shutdown function in bios, but it still shut down (wasn't there when it happened though)!

I use ITE SmartGuardian that came with the mobo to display temperatures.

How do I remove the heat-spreader? Is there a guide anywhere?

Ok, I detached the heat-spreader, but the cooler is too short to reach the core.

I reattached the heat-spreader and added some ArcticCooling5 grease (there wasn't very much when I took it appart) and mounted the cooler without grease between cooler and heat-spreader. Now SmartGuardian and NxSensor show between 43-45* C when transcoding a dvd (almost 100% cpu when using Nero Recode 2).

So I guess it was a bad IHS mount..
