I live in Edmonton currently and working for BioWare we have lots of guys carrying laptops to work. First of all ambient -50c is not something you should see. -50 with wind chill yea ... but -50c plus wind chill ... lol you shouldn't be outdoors anyway. At that temp, long periods of exposure can harm your lungs, eyes, and not to mention fingers and toes ... permanently!!

Just make sure when you come back indoors that you let the laptop warm up before you turn it on. Also keep in mind while outdoors there is little moisture in -40c temps ... indoors there is a ton. Let it warm up and dry off. Other then that lots of guys in my office do it and they have no problems that I know about. Also it doesn't stay that temp level for very long here. A few weeks to a month at the most.
