Extracting MP3 Tracks

Hi all. I'm trying to figure out a way to pull the MP3 tracks out of video clips that I have in avi files. I want to pull the sound tracks off and put them onto my iPod... Can Quicktime Pro do this?

Think you got it backwards. That's to convert WAV to MP3. The OP wants to take existing MP3 tracks out of AVIs.
However, Virtualdub can do it. Just set it to Direct Stream Copy in the Audio tab, and then do File -> Save WAV. It'll have a WAV extension, but it'll actually be an MP3 file, so you can rename it to .MP3.

when you use "save to WAV" in virtualdub, it saves it as an uncompressed WAV file, even if it's a compressed mp3 in the divx/xvid file. he needs to convert it to mp3 with a third party app, such as dbpoweramp.

actually, we're both right.

i always use "full processing mode" which apparently saves it as an uncompressed audio (wav) even if it's a compressed mp3 in the avi.

with full processing mode off, it saves the mp3, although the filename is says it's a .wav., in which case simple renaming would work.

i only work with uncompressed audio (wav-->tmpgenc-->mp2) so i didn't know it was even an option.

Actually 😀 it saves it as uncompressed because it uses PCM as the default compression. If you set the Compression in the Audio tab to something else, Save WAV will use that, so you can reprocess it as Vorbis if you want to.

But as we've both said, Virtualdub can do it. It's quite a capable program. Damn fine deal, considering the price.
