i'm going try re-installing windows again. i'm thinking one of the windows updates screwed it up or something.

I try to have updated Ghost images of Windows installs so I don't have to start from scratch. Of course, this is best done by having your OSs relegated to their own partitions, apps and data elsewhere.

this was after installing it on a blank hard drive. this pc didn't have an os on it previously.

I have a similar computer (P4 Northwood 2.26 GHz, 1 GB DDR333 RAM, Geforce 4 TI 4400) and I use it all the time. It is much much quieter that the PC in my sig and works great for everything besides modern gaming, heavy encoding, and such. I plan to use it as a HTPC in the future.

My main PC (Beauty in my sig), is a do-it-all PC for me, including HTPC. I can't even hear it when I watch a movie with it or HDTV. Both PC's are very quiet. The video card in Beauty is pretty much inaudible (the fan), and the one in Truth is fanless with a Zalman heatsink.

well, i got windows re-installed and got all the windows updates but now its doing another thing it did previously. when it loads, it takes forever for the desktop to show up after i log in. when it finally loads, certain things don't work and when i open windows they don't show up on the task bar. this doesn't happen all the time though.

its really weird.

That is strange. A fresh install of Windows usually acts well. Is this XP?

I would post that one in the operating system forum, maybe also in the technical support forum for ideas.
