The biggest downside is the added travel time needing to connect through Europe but if you have the time I'd pick this over any of the ~12 or so Caribbean Islands we've been to
From the pics of the beach though, the beaches and water doesn't look anywhere near as nice as the Caribbean. Is that accurate or was that beach pic pretty much how it all looked?

Did you see any dragon trees in the Canaries?
We did indeed although apparently neglected to take a picture of one (or the picture turned out badly and my wife culled it from the collection)

That was on the windier side of Gran Canaria so the water was more turbulent and less colorful than some of the other beach locations. Sand was well up there in terms of softness and fineness - and I like to think I have very strong opinions about sand quality. Not Seychelles quality but quite good especially considering the lack of purposeful grooming. Maspalomas was nicer than where my picture was taken but I gave up pretty quickly on taking nice beach pictures given the propensity for bare breasts.

There are a number of islands in the chain and Fuerteventura is known as the best option if beaches are your thing. Looks quite nice but we had to constrain our island selections. Choosing what islands to visit was an unusually hard decision for us so its very likely we'll head back at some point to visit more of them
