Over New Years we traveled to the Seychelles and Kenya. Why those two locations? A big part of my planning is usually searching for what airline award space is available and choosing interesting locations from the resulting list of options. Much of East Africa was available so then it became what I could string together without too much time spent in airports. We also liked the idea of mixing a relaxing beach\ocean vacation with a safari. This was a bit harder for Africa because connection times do not line up well. At all. So I hunted for some that might give us a few hours to explore places like Frankfurt, Zurich and Addis Adaba. This was the resulting routing:

DTW-FRA-ADD-SEZ-ADD-NBO-DAR-ZRH-YYZ-DTW

We were originally on a variety of aircraft all in seats 2a and 2c but aircraft changes and a problem where my wife lost all her seat assignments meant this was a tour of various A330 aircraft in various business class seats. She wasn't the only one who lost her original seat assignment. At least 3 other people on our first Lufthansa flight did too so a bit of musical chairs was played after boarding.

Camera equipment taken:
Canon 5d Mk III
Canon 70-200mm f2.8
Canon lens extender 1.4x (Effective range 98-280mm)
Canon 24-105mm f4.0
Canon 35mm f1.4
Fuji Finepix XP70 underwater
Samsung S9

We ended up using the extender + 70-200mm pretty much exclusively on the Safari. While a great combination overall at times the 280mm range was not quite enough while others 98mm was too much. If we did another Safari and only a Safari I would bring our second camera body to mount the 24-105 to and go for either the 2x extender + 70-200mm or rent\buy the 100-400mm on our 5D Mk III. Also AI Servo worked extremely well to keep the moving animals in focus

Various other lessons learned:
-Be prepared to act like lines don't exist
-Various recommendations for 'Safari clothes' are overblown, at least for the Masai Mara in Kenya. We saw a lot of people in shorts and sandals
-The mosquito situation was not as bad as expected. We have more at home (But much fewer Malaria carrying ones)
-American passport holders are treated differently at various checkpoints. We were consistently treated better and asked fewer questions. Or even just waived on without a glance beyond the cover of our passports while others were stopped and questioned
-Have proof of your onward flights available. We've almost never been asked to show these before but was consistently asked to show our onward tickets on this trip by Passport Control. I recommend taking screenshots of flight information as wifi and cell service can be unreliable
-You, and everything else in the vehicle, will be covered in a fine coat of dust at the end of each Safari day.
-One other oddity was that NO ONE looked at our Yellow Card vaccination forms. You need to get the Yellow Fever vaccine for Kenya and when traveling to other areas after visiting Kenya. Not a single official opened them up to make sure we got the vaccine

Anyway here are the various A330 seats ranked in order of my preference:
Lufthansa:

Swiss:

Air Canada:

The Lufthansa non-bulkhead ones win out if you don't care about direct aisle access from the window seat. They had the best width for my broad shoulders, best length and most space for my size 13 feet. The bulkhead ones were pretty close but the foot cubby was enclosed meaning less room for my feet. Also Flight Attendants like to store stuff on the shelf in front of you so there is a bit of interruption from that.

Swiss was next but their seat was noticeably narrower. The fuselage was actually in the way of my shoulder a bit which is not something I recall happening before on an international business class configuration. I was still able to manage a solid 6 hours of sleep in the seat so it couldn't have been that bad though.

I really wanted to like the Air Canada seat and layout. Direct aisle access. More privacy. more spaced out layout. But there were just too many misses. There was very limited storage at the seat itself so no room for a personal item bag at the seat - or really any good place to put the blanket, pillow, etc. Also they removed the center overhead bins. While it made for a slightly more spacious feel in the cabin, when combined with the lack of seat storage, meant there was a scramble for overhead bin space. I don't think this should be something you have to deal with in business class on a wide body aircraft. The seat was also the shortest and narrowest of them all when fully reclined. So going forward I will actively avoid the AC A330 if there are other options available. (This was also originally going to be their new 789 aircraft with a better seat)

With quite a few hours to kill on our first layover we headed into Frankfurt

After spending a few cold, foggy hours in Old Town we headed back to the airport and to the Lufthansa Arrivals lounge for a shower since we had another 8 hour flight to Addis Ababa. The shower facilities there are fantastic with 24+ personal shower areas and a lounge with a decent array of food and drinks

I'm a big fan of showers after\in the middle of a long trip so I was quite happy with the facilities

Addis Ababa

For various reasons (including a traffic jam on the main airport road caused my a herd of donkeys and then a herd of goats) we didn't get much time here

I couldn't really get any pictures during our rides either because of how packed the vehicles were. (The guy on the right doesn't actually have a seat. He spent the trip kneeling)

Their airport was an....interesting experience. In case anyone is traveling through there in Business Class - your gate waiting area is somewhere other than the listed gate number. Basically if they tell you a gate number different than what is on your ticket and what is on the overhead board - listen. The visual and written information is for plebes only. If you don't listen you'll have to stand with the unwashed masses and share a bus to your plane. If you listen to the verbal information you have a nice, secluded sitting area and get your own bus you can actually sit down in.

I cannot even begin to describe how perfect some of the beaches were there. While part of my ranking includes seclusion (and there was a grand total of 3 other people far off in the distance while we were there) the sand was some of the softest sand we've ever come across. No sand flies or anything other than a few crabs. This was Police Bay - about a 20min walk from the nearest road so this was with no grooming.

Closer to the car is Little Police Bay which was not a bad place for a sunset

Her $$ is her $$ and your $$ is her $$ so, yes, she is the bread winner. :D

Maybe in your household ;)

Tough to tell with all the jackets being worn but there might have been one other guy.

Did you run into these guys yet?

So that's Africa, eh? Where's all the sand?

Heh - my wife played that several times while we were there

Wow... once again, Exterous puts on a master class for Coolcoin worthy forum postings. The rest of you are just slackers :)
Let's see, if my kid doesn't get any more scholarships ( :oops::eek: ), I'll be out $21K/yr + random expenses. You want to pick up that nut and I'll go on vacation. :colbert;

Send me to the Seychelles and I'll see what I can do.

Come on... there isn't anything cool to take pictures of where you live?

I live around the Connecticut coast line, so I personally have no good excuses for not posting more cool pictures here.

That said, awarding myself Coolcoin would just be weird.

Subscribed! It's nice to be able to see into how the 1%ers travel. Quite the difference from the cattle class seats we sit in. These pictures are as close as I will get to business or first class.

I suck at taking pictures. I do take a lot but most just end up being terrible.

The cool pics are mostly posted in this thread. We have some good photographers here.

After a short stay on Mahe we headed to Cerf Island - a semi-private island about a 15min boat ride from Mahe. On our way we passed a numerous yachts. Talking to our host apparently they mostly belong to middle eastern oil familes and are rarely taken out - maybe once a year or once every other year. But they pay 2-4 people to clean them per day so they are ready just in case.

Boat ride to island:

It was self catering private 3 room building with private pool. On our side of the island there were 3 other villas with a total of 6 other people staying there. There were a couple of other resorts\villas on the opposite side of the island but there were maybe 20-25 people on the island. The seclusion of our villa was great as we couldn't see any of the other buildings or people from our deck, windows or pool area

Self catering on an island is an interesting experience. Hope you make menu based grocery lists well because its not easy to head to the grocery store for more. Don't forget spices and seasonings! Also, because we were on a sparsely populated island, potable water wasn't plentiful. We needed to boil water for washing dishes and get drinking water from the watercooler at the small reception building. Sounds worse than it actually was though because we only really had two activities planned for our days there: kayak and snorkel

Our main mode of transportation for the next 3 days:
aWpjstK.jpg

Once again we found several deserted beaches with amazing, naturally occurring perfect sand. There are several small island clusters off the cost of Victoria\Mahe that are reachable by kayak assuming the ocean is relatively calm. So in the event that 4 other people show up off in the distance and ruin your deserted beach experience, just hop in your kayak and head to a different island\beach (which we did the one time someone showed up on OUR beach)

Yes! That must mean I am cool right? Right?!

Seychelles is on my list of places to visit one day. Did you do any diving there?

It's a pretty awesome place. If you went I;d be curious to know how they stack up against the ones you've been to. I don't see how they could get any better but you never know (and some people might prefer an easy ability to get drinks from a restaurant over not seeing another person at all)

Sadly I've given up diving at least for the time being. I always struggled a bit with equalizing my right ear and have been prone to ear infections lately. My doctor thinks its because I am re-developing allergies and the congestion is inhibiting my ability to clear my ears. I'm on allergy shots now but, as I understand it, it can be years before it fully takes effect

I have heard that the currents bring seaweed and seaweed like plants and debris and that the currents change direction several times a year which can affect which areas make for good diving and which beaches are clear of icky sea grass. So if you go you might want to take that into consideration

Outstanding!

A like just doesn't seem like enough.

Thanks!

Sounds terrible. I'll pass but thanks for the offer!

There are a lot of road warriors and some credit card users who rack up miles and status to use to get these seats. We used miles and $358 total for these flights. And sometimes there are just good sales. I've seen some business class seat sales to Asia\Oceania for $1500-2000 round trip. Not cheap but not exclusive to 1%ers

We really do. Once I have some animals in I was going to throw a link in that thread to here

There's been a problem this past year with sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean in general. We saw a bunch of it down in the Keys last year which kind of sucked and made for not so nice beach days as far as it looking cool and stuff. Thankfully in Grand Cayman where we were, there was none at all, except on the other side of the island where we drove to check out another place. It wasn't a lot and it was only in the close shallows. Once past that you could swim and snorkel no problem.

I prefer going to beaches with less people. We enjoy going to beaches with our own coolers and bringing our own drinks instead of paying $15 for a drink at the bar of a big crowded resort. We hang out at our resorts sometimes don't get me wrong, but that's typically at the end of the day after we've been out all day on less crowded beaches that we take rental cars to.

That sucks about your ears. I hope I never experience that. I have asthma and am allergic to a lot of stuff too, but the minimal dives I've done it hasn't bothered me. I'm in the midst of booking another trip to Grand Cayman in March to finish up my OW and get my AOW as well. Hopefully I don't get sick this time again and can do it.
