External USB modem overheating

I am using 3com (US Robotics) USB 56k Voice Faxmodem Pro blah blah blah. Anyway, when the modem is sitting flat on my desk as it was designed to, I can only keep a live connection for about 10 minutes. The bottom side seems to put off the most heat, so when it is sitting how it supposed to it gets too hot and I lose connections.

For about the last 2 years I have been using it sitting up on its side, but its pretty unstable (physically, like it can fall off the desk easily). Does anyone else have a modem that gets hot like this? I want to get inside the modem so i can add a custom HSF, but I cant get it open.
