External USB hard drive REALLY slows down Vista 64 boot.

When I have my WD USB external hard drive plugged in and 64 bit Vista Ultimate is booting there is this really, really long black screen just before the Welcome green tie-die splash screen comes up. It ranges anywhere from 1.5 minutes to 2 minutes. But when I unplug this external drive this delay all but completely disappears. My boot time is a fraction of what it is when the drive is installed.

I like having it installed. Is there anything I can do to speed up the Windows loading time with this drive installed?

Loading screens go as follows;

Text for nVidia video card
Splash screen for motherboard
some more text for hardware and such
a moving, green Windows status bar that lasts for a few moments
****** A long, long, long, long black screen (When USB drive is connected.)
Windows Vista logo ball (Really quick)
green, psychedelic Welcome screen
Windows desktop.
