external usb drive not showing up in 'my computer'

i recently purchased a wetern digital 'wd800' 80gb hard drive, and an external ide to usb 2.0 case. after assembling, i connected to my computer which is running windows xp. my com picked it up and installed drivers. after saying all was well, and checking to see drivers had been installed, i went to try. however, there is not a place for it in 'my computer', thus i am unable to access it. my understanding is this is to do with it not been formatted, etc. can anybody provide me with some instructions on how to do this, or any other helpful advice.
