external sata enclosure

Hi all,

I'm looking to build an external sata enclosure, which would hopefully hold about 5 drives.

I'm looking at this: http://www.cooldrives.com/mi4sapomu3ge.html

and also saw this (doesnt look as good as the one above) http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/satakits.php

If I wanted to build my own I'd need a SATA port multiplexer. Anyone know a good, cheap, one? I already have a spare PSU to use for this setup, for small cases anyone have a suggestion? anyone done this before and have a suggestion?

thanks in advance,
mike

I am also looking for an external sata enclosure. Those you listed already got build-in PSU. It seems cooldrives.com sell stuffs for a little bit cheaper. I don't know about their shipping cost since I am still in the research phase. 🙂

the shipping at the cooldrives site is $25 to the bay area in ca. seems reasonable. so like $225 total, seems like a real good deal to me..

the second question I have is, I have an nforce4 mobo at the moment, MSI K8N Neo4 Platnium SLI... anyone know anything about going from SATA --> eSATA? What do I need to do this.. will a cable just work.. whats the cheapest method.

thanks in advance

I just bought an Adaptec SATA enclosure. It works well and I've tested it with several hard drives and none have given me any problems.

Nice to know. Where/how is it connected to your PC?

I haven't tried connecting it to an eSATA port. I only use it via USB2.0.

I don't know about how you want to connect to your extrenal drives... But since I am will be using the 2 SATA port on my motherboard, I will need this i.e. SATA --> eSATA since the enclose I am going to buy will come with eSATA to eSATA cables.

[MB] SATA ---> backplane --> Enclosure. Comes out to about $200 shipped to where I am.

If you need eSATA PCI card then the eSATA to eSATA cables that comes with enclosure should works just fine. BTW, just make sure eSATA (3 ft) cables are included. Otherwise you will have to buy them separately.
