External NIC dropping connection?

Something that I though was gone has come back again. I have a new exchange 5.5 server running with Win NT server 4.0 sp6a with two 3com 3c505C NIC?s. Yesterday I had the Internet connection just drop three times. Only a reboot will bring it back online. Internally I could ping the external and internal IP?s of each respective NIC but someone outside of the network could not ping the external IP nor could we receive e-mail from external domains. There is NOTHING in the event log. Aside from the NIC being bad any ideas?
