I have stumbled on a wierd and annoying problem. Whenever I connect an external harddrive, iPod or anything else that falls under the same category, my computer does the regular pling plong sound, shows "Found new hardware" etc.
However, sometimes it recognizes the hdd (Found new hardware. Maxtor xxx) and sometimes it says You're hardware could not be installed and may not work properly. In both cases, the new drive does not show up under My Computer, raraly in Device Manager and never in Computer Management.
My mouse, keyboard and headset all use USB without any problems at all. I recently formatted, reinstalled all drivers etc but the problem remains. The device manager shows no indication of any missing drivers or anything that might give me a clue.
Does anyone know what the problem might be here?

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb
1gb DDR pc3200 (400mhz)
