external hdd- booting into a specific software folder

Hi their. Quick question- do most computers these days support booting off a USB HDD?

The reason I ask is I have so many CD's that I was thinking perhaps just putting them onto a external HDD. Is it possible to create like a boot script which will allow me to select which program I want to boot to?

E.g. I boot into the HDD, and either a menu or a dos window where I type a command appears which will hand over the boot operation to the folder I choose, such as booting into memtest?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
