External hdd backup question?????

I decided to try out this new device called a NDAS (no not an NAS) but an NDAS. Network Direct Attached Storage. Anyway it says it is the fastest method of transferring data. I have tried a direct connection through a gig lan and it transferred 35GB of info in an 8 hour period. I then hooked up an external hdd through esata and it did 35GB in less than 5 minutes. Can anyone explain what is happening? Am I doing something wrong? Also, this hdd runs at 52 idle in this enclosure and 35 in others.
 
Directly attached (Esata especially) will always transfer faster than anything over the network. Gigabit max will probably give you 700mbit or 70-80 mbytes/sec. An Esata hard drive...probably a few gbytes/sec throughput

Huh? HD's cap at around 100 MB/s -- there's no single drive which can do "a few gbytes/sec". What were you thinking?

You used to be able to tell when marketing people were lying by seeing their lips move. These days however, this has become common knowledge, so they've learned to lie without even moving their lips!

esata at (from the sound of it) 3Gbps or gigalan at 1Gbps (then subtract network overhead and other network traffic, nevermind that you may just assume youre getting giga speed to start with) is what is happenening.

36 GB / 270s = 36 * 1000 MB / 270s = 133.33 MB/s.

This is very fast for modern HD's. It's theoretically possible for some of the fastest current hard drives to sustain this rate in the outer sectors, but it's so fast that I'd suspect that may there were some errors in the measurements or the time that the operation reported it was "done".

It's also consistent with my "around 100 MB/s" comment -- I'm just nit-picking about 10 or so MB/s in my above remarks suspecting measurement errors.
