External HD for Cable DVR Box?

I remember a discussion a while back about hooking up an external Hard Drive via USB to a DVR cable box to back up or store recorded shows. Anyone know if this can be done and what equipment would work with Cox Explorer 8300 HD box?

that usb drive has to be dedicated to dvr since the box will format the drive. I am not sure if you can copy shows from internal to external since that is by implementation and I don't know the box you are talking about.
