External HD for Cable DVR Box?

I remember a discussion a while back about hooking up an external Hard Drive via USB to a DVR cable box to back up or store recorded shows. Anyone know if this can be done and what equipment would work with Cox Explorer 8300 HD box?😕

that usb drive has to be dedicated to dvr since the box will format the drive. I am not sure if you can copy shows from internal to external since that is by implementation and I don't know the box you are talking about.
