I am going to purchase an external hd for my desktop and laptop,so I can backup all my files including the OS. I think that I still need a program such as Acronis to do this? Is this correct? Thanks

You can use Acronis if you like. You can also use Windows ntbackup. I have found this to be very affective as well.

yep, 2000 and XP. I think Vista has something that you can use a .bkf (backup file extension) to import in but you can't backup Vista with it.
In XP just go Start- Run- ntbackup and go through and setup what you want backed up and where. pretty simple to use.

Do yourself a favour, buy an external enclosure and a standard hard disk to put in it.

Much more flexible solution.
