External hard drive questions

My main rig is starting to run out of space, so I bought an external hard drive a few months ago for storage.

I have a Fantom Titanium-II TFD500U16 500GB External hard drive (with a WD5000AAKS inside), and I had a few questions.

1) Is it possible to take the WD out of the Fantom and plug it straight into my rig without any sort of formatting?

2) Is it possible to replace the hard drive in the Fantom with another, smaller unit (say, a 320gb unit)? I don't suppose the controller inside cares about what HDD it's hooked up to, right?

I'm pretty sure yes to both questions unless the case uses proprietary drivers and software which I doubt.

There are such good deals out there on 500 gig portables I have bought two lately and put older/smaller drives into them with no problems at all.
